This is the moment I remind you all that Gary Dahl was raised in Spokane and graduated from Washington State University. 💜💜

Pet Rocks were a short-lived fad that originated in 1975, conceived by Gary Dahl, a copywriter and advertising executive from California. The concept behind Pet Rocks was simple yet bizarre: they were smooth stones that had been gathered from a beach in Mexico and packaged in a box as if they were living pets. Each box contained a rock, a small manual on how to care for the "pet," and a cardboard carrier with air holes.
Dahl came up with the idea for Pet Rocks after listening to his friends complain about the difficulty of taking care of real pets, and he thought it would be funny to create a low-maintenance "pet" that didn't require feeding, grooming, or attention. The idea was a hit, and Pet Rocks became an overnight sensation. Dahl sold more than 1.5 million Pet Rocks in just a few months, making him a millionaire.
Despite the absurdity of the concept, Pet Rocks were a popular gift item in the mid-1970s, and they even spawned a number of imitators, including Pet Logs, Pet Stones, and Pet Bricks. However, the fad quickly fizzled out, and by the end of 1975, Pet Rocks had become a relic of pop culture history.
