ALERT: US Coast Guard jumps onto a runaway boat and safely stops it in Maryland. Authorities say the man operating the vessel suddenly fell overboard, and the Coast Guard had to intercept and stop the boat. The incident has raised awareness among boat operators to wear their engine shut-off clip lanyards, which are required by federal law on most boats under 26 feet.

Charlotte Fire mourns the loss of Rockdale County Firefighter Juan Antonia Smith, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty while responding to a structure fire in Georgia. Firefighter Smith, 26, was one of three firefighters riding a ladder truck responding to an emergency call when the apparatus overturned. He was ejected during the crash and died at the scene despite the efforts of fellow firefighters and first responders to save him. A dedicated member of Rockdale County Fire Rescue, Smith was known for his servant's heart, positive spirit, and commitment to helping others. He was active in his church, sang in the men's chorus, and was remembered by family and friends as someone who was always smiling and eager to serve his community. Our hearts are with the Smith family, the members of Rockdale County Fire Rescue, and all those mourning this devastating loss. We stand in solidarity with them as they honor Juan's life, service, and ultimate sacrifice.

A Baltimore native is making history in gymnastics. Kyrstin Johnson, a Temple University gymnast, became the first gymnast ever to perform during halftime at a National Women's Soccer League professional soccer match, taking the field at NJ/NY Gotham FC in April. The milestone comes after a standout 2024 season in which Johnson won gold, silver and bronze medals at the USA Gymnastics National Championships. While she was a student at Talladega College, she set the HBCU all-time vault record with a score of 9.925 and became the first HBCU gymnast to earn three medals at a single national meet. Several of Johnson's routines have also gone viral on social media, with one performance drawing more than 9 million views. Johnson, who holds a 3.8 GPA, is currently in the NCAA transfer portal with one season of eligibility remaining.
