Our study found that recently bleached coral was scraped by #Scarusdimidiatus. Q: Why do #parrotfish target recently bleached coral? A: Protein-rich #Cyanobacteria are the first to colonise #dead_coral. N2 fixation gives them the advantage over algae. rdcu.be/b4K1l

Why do excavating #parrotfish like #Chlorurus_microrhinos bite deep into bioeroded dead reef substrates? To find out we prepared petrograph thins from the #reef that the #Steephead_Parrotfish had just bitten. #Ostreobium #Coral_Reefs 🏝️ @SpringerNature link.springer.com/article/10…

Our new paper describes how we follow a #parrotfish until it bites repetitively, so we know which species made the bite. This is important as scars left by cryptic corallivorous #blennies can be mistaken for parrotfish bites. Then we core it. rdcu.be/b4K1l @SpringerCORE
