English monk, Saint of Northumbria, Doctor of the Church & The Father of English History. Scholar & Author: Historia Ecclesiastica, De temporibus. d.26 May 735.
The best feast-day-of-the-Venerable-Bede I’ve ever had as, before his tomb, to the singing of choirs, amid the billowing of incense, in a chapel lit by shafts of sunlight, dressed like a captain of the Varangian guard, I am inaugurated as the Bede Librarian at @durhamcathedral
On 26th May 735AD Bede offered his final praises to the Lord and died. Today, 1,291 years later, we celebrate the life and work of Bede and his witness to Jesus Christ
Tonight at 5.30pm, we inaugurate the first honorary Bede Librarian at Durham Cathedral, historian Tom Holland
Whitsuntide, the days after Pentecost, was for centuries *the* time of the year for holiday-making and summer fun - fairs, plays, games, and parades. It's the reason we have a Bank Holiday in late May, which this year falls nicely on Whit Monday itself. aclerkofoxford.blogspot.com/…
It's Whitsun, Pentecost, the summer festival when the Holy Spirit descends with fire. In this Anglo-Saxon image the flames touch the lips of each apostle, and even the sky has turned fiery red.
'Tongues of fire they had, when with love they preached the glory of God' (Ælfric)
Today is the feast day of The Venerable Bede
Bede was a great monk and scholar who wrote and translated around 40 books, hymns and poems on subjects including religion, science, history, astronomy, mathematics and language
At Festal Evensong at 5.30pm, historian Tom Holland @holland_tom will be inaugurated as the first Bede Librarian and the service will be sung by the Chapel Choir of Hild Bede College, with an address by Prof Alec Ryrie

St. Bede, part of the Benedictine window in @Nrw_Cathedral, created by Moira Forsyth in 1964. The Latin inscription is part of a longer text spanning the entire window. Bede the scholar, theologian, historian, poet, scientist, biographer & priest died #onthisday 25 May 735.
Praying for #PopeFrancis in his illness. Hoping fervently that the time for farewells is not yet. When was a Holy Father so much loved since John XXIII?
“I am atheist, but seeing the kindness of this man and the peace he offered the mind of a child brings tears to my eyes.” Commenter
Pope Francis has the Good Shepherd’s heart. He comforts the afflicted &brings the haughty low. Here,he consoles a boy whose father died an atheist.
Not impossible that I may leave X in the future. If I do, it won’t be to migrate to a platform where skies are said to be endlessly blue. Such a ‘nice’ place doesn’t sound like the real world to me without the challenge & stimulus that comes with robust, even abrasive, debate.
The sun has come out today after days of cloud, and that's 'St Martin's summer': an old name for a period of fine weather around Martinmas. More poetically, the phrase can be used for a time of happiness or love which comes late in life - sunshine in the autumn of old age.
A treat from the @ushawdurham incunable collection. Historia ecclesiastica by Caesarea of Eusebius, a chronological account of the development of Early Christianity. Most notable for being the first full length historical narrative written from the Christian point of view.

Today is the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. We are directly across the road from the Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls, the sister basilica of St Peter’s and burial place of St Paul, who is one of our patrons. Buona festa a tutti voi.
Congratulations to our #UniversityChallenge winning team! Harry Scully, Bea Bennett, Alex Radcliffe, Chloe Margaux and Tom Haines-Matos, with Badger, the cathedral cat. We’re so proud of you. Well done to @BristolUni , worthy opponents in their first ever final 🥳🤝
Today is St Bede's Day, and we're celebrating the life of The Venerable Bede, with his feast day.
As it's #ThrowbackThursday, we thought we would share this photograph of Bede's Tomb in the Galilee Chapel taken by local photographer Henry Herbert in the 1880s.
Thursday 25 May marks the feast day of St Bede the Venerable.
Join us to celebrate the life of St Bede with an Evensong and Procession to his shrine. Professor Giles Gasper from the Department of History at Durham University will be preaching this service.
⏰ 5.30pm
Did you know that the Venerable Bede was the man who worked out when we celebrate Easter each year? We still use the system he painstakingly created in 725AD, today!
