The Post has had many glorious lives but its heyday as a bold, brainy weekly in the ‘80s was exceptional. That was Neville’s vision. Canada was and is better for it
Gutted to learn of the death of Neville Nankivell, fmr editor of Financial Post (now National Post), who hired me in 1987, one of my first jobs in hackery, and sent me to NYC bureau a year later, giving me my start in foreign corresponding. Generous, smart and funny, he. RIP

He loved to tell the story of how he got his start, as a kid reporter for The Globe & Mail in Ottawa who got into a scuffle — he said punches were thrown — with Pierre Trudeau. The paper quickly packed him off to the Peking bureau. He never turned back. Never one to stand down!

Congrats to the ‘Riders and all of Saskatchewan. Best team in the CFL this year. Among the best fans anywhere, every year. And just love that the offence was coached by Marc Mueller, grandson of the ‘Rider GOAT, the late Ron Lancaster. Green & White! theglobeandmail.com/sports/f…

Global security will be shapedd by energy, critical minerals and data. China has all three. The g7 has two, and this will get us closer to the third. Nothing in space or on the battlefield works without this stuff. Well done G7 theglobeandmail.com/business…

Canada-US relations are about more than trade. In the coming months, a new continental security strategy may take shape. On the table: — shared approaches to procurement/finance — sharing of critical minerals and energy reserves — Arctic security — space inter-connectivity

We already have a version of a continental shield, but as weapons systems, especially from China, get more sophisticated, Can Canada and the US afford not to be close security partners? And should a trade-security deal be our goal? _____________________________

Defence minister @DavidMcGuinty spoke Fri about the coming defence industrial strategy. Few details now but it’s clear @MarkJCarney has some big security choices ahead. So does @realDonaldTrump. 🇨🇦🇺🇸have protected NAm for decades — and still can, if we see each other as partners

Sovereignty can be expressed in many forms. Pumpkin pie on the 2d Monday of October is just one. Happy Thanksgiving, Canada. True north, strong and free. 🇨🇦

Congrats to 🇨🇦 (and longtime @WesternU economics prof) Peter Howitt as well. Now at @BrownUniversity, he’s one of the deans of the intangibles economy. As attention returns to the physical economy, this Nobel is a powerful reminder of the role of ingenuity in economic growth
🚨 2025 Nobel Prize in Economics goes to Mokyr, Aghion and Howitt 🚨 "for having explained innovation-driven economic growht" The best prize in years!

10-7-23. The horror. The terror. The reminder of hate in our world. 1,195 dead. 251 taken hostage. Never forget.

A tragic loss. Nigel was the model businessman who put country first. Over the past decade, I’ve lost count of Conservatives and Liberals I’ve heard call someone “another Nigel Wright.” It was high praise. Decent, demanding, honest, humble.
Laureen and I are shocked and heartbroken to learn of the sudden passing of Nigel Wright. A unique and deeply accomplished person, Nigel combined intellectual acumen with incredible capacity for work.  Nigel loved his country and believed in the value of public service, having twice served in the Office of the Prime Minister of Canada, including as my Chief of Staff.  He was also a man of faith who cared about his fellow citizens and generously supported a range of philanthropic causes throughout his life.  Nigel was truly a special person whom we have lost far too soon.  Our condolences to his family and many friends, both in Canada and around the world.

A new space race is underway. And Canada has the chance to lead. Here’s a case to allocate 5% of our 5% NATO commitment, or about $7.5 billion a year, to space. 1 Next battlefield 2 Allies & intelligence 3 Canadian strengths 4 Economic spinoffs theglobeandmail.com/opinion/…

theglobeandmail.com/business… 1. Should/will 🇨🇦 place restrictions on strategic IP & foreign takeovers in quantum? 2. Should/will 🇨🇦 regulate use of critical tech like quantum? 3. Should/will 🇨🇦 play direct investing role incl VC? Tech ‘25 = national security industrial strategy
