It typically consists of three elements:
✔ A sensor to measure a process variable (PV),
✔ A controller to compute the adjustments for reaching the desired setpoint (SP), and
✔ An actuator to apply the adjustments.
When the control action is independent of the process variable, it is considered an open loop. On the other hand, in a closed loop, the control action is adjusted according to the feedback of the process or system’s output.
