There’s widespread desire for a next #UNSG willing to take risks. I told @EdithLedererAP the UN is missing from major crisis talks because it’s playing it too safe. We need a leader with the courage to work for collective peace, even at risk of failing.🇺🇳 apnews.com/article/united-na…

2/ Three traits the moment demands: force of personality capable of commanding global attention; a track record of personal and political risk-taking; and hands-on problem-solving that doesn't confuse process with consequence.

Honored to speak to UN ambassadors @AustriaUN about making UN relevant on peace & security. Reform must lead to a more effective Security Council. Can a critical mass of states band together to defend rule of law & increase the costs of using force--reputational, economic costs?
Security Council reform remains a top priority for Austria! 🌎🌍🌏 At last week's 4th edition of the Open House, civil society and academia from around the world participated in an in-depth exchange with Member States on advancing the shared objective of reform. 🇦🇹🤝🇰🇼🤝🇳🇱

CEO @M2Pham explores this moment for multilateralism in the latest @UKandEU Report on "UN Reform". The UK & EU have much to gain from a modern UN – protecting Charter's values to delivering results. They're well placed to lead reform. More 👇🏼 ukandeu.ac.uk/reports/multil…

This is EXACTLY the kind of conflict the UN (Secretary-General) should be mediating. There are many wars where it’s hard to see how the UN can best help. But in this case, I really don’t see why the Secretary-General cannot fly tonight to Thailand, Cambodia and other capitals in the region and at least try to deescalate fast-rising tensions. It’s what the UN was set up to do and for decades did as a matter of course.
For anyone curious as to why #Cambodia and #Thailand are fighting, I wrote a detailed explainer back in July: thediplomat.com/2025/07/the-…

For the first 4 months of the Trump administration, #UNSC members and the Palestinians themselves, held back from resolutions on #Gaza that could anger the new administration. Now the spell is broken. I don't think this will be the end of it. Next stop #UNGA.
The US vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for an “immediate, unconditional and permanent” ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.  The US was the only country to vote against the resolution. 14 other nations voted in favor and there were no abstentions.
