John just phoned me. Did I mind? Someone had told him I had fallen over again. Did I mind??? I was deeply touched. I only half understand why he has recently been getting in touch more recently, but I'm glad he has.

No car has power steering. You're talking about power assisted steering (p.a.s.), in which a direct, albeit assisted, connection is maintained between steering and steered wheels. Only on cetain large commercial vehicles is there no mechanical connection.

Its predecessor was also everywhere at the time; and its big brother, the Classic, was the first NEW car Dad ever owned. Socialists must think that's so weird. He could have had a new luxury car by then, rather than making financial sacrifices to pay for his child's education.
What's a car that used to be everywhere back in the day, but kids today wouldn't recognize I will start with the ford angular

I've opted for a Basic Funeral; but if someone insists on music, let it be "Hot Rails To Hell" by Blue Oyster Cult.
Have changed my mind on the funeral music. The traditional stuff - Nimrod esp - is just TOO depressing. You don't want to be made more sad than you are already. Now thinking Dambusters Theme

Amazing that I remember the dates of things my greatest hero did? Hardly. Actually he bombed Calais six nights running (31/5/44 - 5/6/44) as part of Operation Fortitude, which he had never heard of at the time, of course. I mentioned the 4th simply because that was the date....
Replying to @StephenLees4
Amazing that you have kept that date alive all these years. Impressive even.

....the subject came up. Of course, six relatively short and easy ops in succession were welcome. Anything was better than a round trip to Essen.... except a one-way trip to Essen, of course.

I second that motion. I met Julie a few times when she was a "hip young gunslinger".
Oh, please get well soon.

Thanks. Brave men flew the B17. Though it had twice as many gun positions as my dad's Lancaster, that hardly compensated for the fact that USAAF ops were flown in broad daylight, initially without fighter escort. That reminds me.....

@StephenLees4 Good thread for you

.....This afternoon 82 years ago, Dad was preparing for another night participating in "Operation Fortitude", the most successful military deception ever. So successful was it that, when "Operation Overlord" was launched on the 6th, Hitler was convinced that it was a feint....
