The Irish playright George Bernard Shaw, photographed 119 years ago, at the age of 51. I have cleaned and enhanced this very striking Autochrome portrait by Alvin Langdon Coburn, taken in colour in 1907 via the Lumiere brother's newly-patented colour glass-plate process.

It's not just the exploitation of a tragedy. JD Vance's picture of Britain - where migrants have led to a crime surge - is the opposite of the truth. comment.press/vance1234

Compelling essay by sci-fi writer Ted Chiang on why LLMs are nowhere near consciousness, but why it serves the interests of LLM companies to constantly suggest that they might be. I've pulled one quote below, but the whole article is worth reading.

For the love of God, bring back fact-checkers. Bring back copy editors. Bring back public editors. Bring back standards. Everybody tighten TF up.

100% this. Denmark is an amazing country. There's a reason its one of the happiest countries in the world.
Denmark is likely not the first place you visit in Europe. But it is an extremely safe and very pleasant country to visit in the summer with average day time temperatures of 20 degrees, 17 hours of daylight and tons of places to visit. Here is my top 10 1. Copenhagen

Have pointlessly reported the Piers and Martin one three times today...
.@dragonjones & @MartinSLewis @X is at it again, allowing false news to be used by advertisers. There is no point in reporting it, as within seconds @X decides that it is OK to use false imaging in advertising. And there is no option for appeal. Hopefully @CMAgovUK can nudge X.

Here is a huge positive to modern life that gets no press. I have an old 2009 Toyota, and the AUX port crapped out about a year ago. Went to YouTube. Young, enthusiastic guy explains how to fix it. It is not obvious - involves taking the dashboard apart in a counter-intuitive way, but once you see it, it's a 15 minute fix. There are actually dozens of videos showing how to do this, and they collectively have well over 200k views. Had this happened in 1995, I would have just lived with it. But the combo of the replacement AUX jack available from Amazon and the video of the simple (but not obvious) fix, I fixed it. I HAVE DONE THIS DOZENS OF TIMES. Replaced the control panel of my dishwasher. Replaced the ice maker in the fridge. Fixed a wonky sanding head on my drill press. Mastered a bandsaw technique that I use for my sculpture. On and on and on... I think it is likely no exaggeration to say billions of fixes and skill upgrades have been performed worldwide that would not have been performed if it were not for the instruction freely given peer-to-peer on YouTube. Take a moment to be happy about this. The busted item keeps performing, rather than going to the landfill. The person learning and doing the fix gains a sense of mastery and saves money. It's an unmixed blessing. Stop doomscrolling. Think of what is busted in your house, find the YouTube video on how to fix it, and fix it.

Good news klaxon from @BBCBreakfast incoming! SO I'm sat on sofa this time last week doom scrolling when I read a post I sit bolt upright 😮 Say to myself I HAVE TO DO THIS STORY THIS IS A STORY I HAVE TO TELL 👇👇👇👇 So I contact @DEREISS_ And OOOOFT! What a week we had😆
Last week I met these two amazing ladies on the flight London Heathrow to Las Vegas. They were in a group of 6 and they were all fuming because they apparently booked two row of 3 but for some reason my seat was booked right in the middle of them. Eventually the woman in the right seat would go back so she asked for help, I moved her seat back and from there we began talking. She asked why I was travelling to vegas alone. I explained it’s wrestlemania, and the concept of mania week from a Indy wrestler standpoint. She told me she used to love wrestling on World of Sport, Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks etc and her grand children love wrestling too. They then asked what time and place I will be wrestling. So I told them to come to Joey Janelas spring break. She doesn’t have social media so I told her to be at the Horseshoe, 7pm, Friday night. GCW. When we got off the plane I said bye to the group. I had a group hug with my new friends and they were insistent that they were going to come to the show. In my head I was thinking (no way they are actually turn up). It gets to Spring Break, I do my match, top rope breaks (but that’s a whole other fucking story) I stand and merch and look who walk up to me. THEY ONLY WENT AND FUCKING TURNED UP TO THE SHOW (There were 6 of them but I only have a photo with these two) After the show I never got to see them and now have no contact as they don’t have social media. So if anyone knows these women PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I know they’re from Cardiff, Wales and want to invite them to a show in the UK!

The @netflix changes to their app on Apple TV are awful... If you're going to replace the internal tvOS player with your own player app - please make it better. Not worse... It's awful both visually and functionally...

Three years ago, I said in my talks that generative AI would eventually start discovering zero-day vulnerabilities. At the time, many people dismissed the idea as unrealistic. It is no longer unrealistic.

I ran some of my writing through an AI checker. 29.7% robot-generated! Thing is, it obviously wasn't. Ethical and creative reasons aside, the book in question is nearly a decade old - well before technology could do this. 1/3
