I wonder often about what it’s like not to be curious

Dammit, I have to wait until TACO Tuesday to play with Fable now?!
The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Claude models is not affected. We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible. Read our full statement: anthropic.com/news/fable-myt…

It’s a bewildering misfortune that Anthropic seems simultaneously to make the best models and harnesses and the worst strategic decisions at the same time.

A little bunny scooted across Adams Ave. right in front of my van but - aware as always of cars following me - I was able to brake enough to slow and squishing was avoided. Adrenaline spike. And whew. And then I thanked … myself. 👇

I try to thank myself for more and more things - a good dream? Nice show! As mentioned, some deft driving maneuver that averts a problem - well done! Forcing myself to do something I’d really, really rather not? Attaboy.

And so here is yet another thing that religions get right - the notion that gratitude is good. Sure, I can imagine sociobiology might say grateful people are more likely to get help from the tribe, as it demonstrates acknowledgement that would telegraph reciprocity. But I believe it reinforces internally whatever actions might have lead up to the self lauding outcome. I dream more (or remember more, whatever) when I thank. I hope my driving is better as a result of these back pats. My weightlifting seems to be progressing. It’s an experiment I’ll continue and what can it hurt. It’s like a Pascal’s Wager with myself.

I would happily brain dump and share everything I have ever learned, every conversation I’ve ever had, every book I’ve read and film so that perfectly honed information using that as context could be stripped to just that essence that adds another brick to my wall – as long as that information could never be misused, which pretty much means as long as it could never be seen by anyone but an automaton completely loyal to me.

The old trope about handing a single dollar to a lawyer so the rest of your conversation is privileged... why can't this be adapted to serve the needs of people who want to interact personally with machines?

Here’s a fun stumper to pose to people presenting some primer of A.I.-qua-LLM. When they say it’s good for summarizing long documents, ask them why they think that’s true. Sure, it seems true, because you can upload a long document and get a shorter – and intelligible - document as output. Nice! But what assurance do you have that what’s really been produced is the gist? How do you know that important details haven't been omitted and irrelevant fluff has been retained? Do you even know if redundancies have been removed? Is the LLM summary and better than snipping the first and last sentences of each paragraph (how I recall I was taught to 'speed read' in high school.) Summarization is still a hard NLP problem.

The benefit of having something like Voice ChatGPT to mutter to, and get feedback (or not, as one commands) is huge. It’s my diary now, I can envision myself as a Socrates with a little Plato recording and expounding on everything I say.

So if that little thing had complete memory of my past, and 360 awareness of my present so much better. Its not hard to imagine what Jony Ive and Altman might have in mind with some device that brings this
