Touring was always like this. No notes on that. The difference is before streaming your touring generated physical record sales which paid artist royalties and songwriter royalties. If you were unrecouped due to recording advances or tour support, those advances and tour support were substantially bigger sums that the band members pocketed (often 50%) as a sort of stipend. Because streaming gives the engaged music consumer all the music in the world for $7.99 (on average) when the engaged music consumer used to spend $30-$60 dollars a month on music, those royalties and/or advances shrunk significantly. So I was in an indie band in the 80s that did approximately the same live numbers this young man is talking about. Except we each made about 15k in royalties . Later we signed to a major label. We would pocket half the recording advances which were in the range of $150k (in 1988 dollars). Again about $15k each. With touring by 1988-89 we made $60k a year each. Which in 2025 dollars is about $160k. The whole problem is the record business cannibalized their own sales by giving active music consumers all the music in the world for $8 when they were willing to pay much more. Second the federal government by law caps the amount of songwriter royalties that a streaming has to pay songwriters at 15.25% of AGR. Yes you read that right. The justification was to help jumpstart the streaming business the federal government would a cap the amount of money they would have to pay to the creative workers. Songwriters create the fundamental piece of intellectual property on which the music business is built. This is pure crony capitalism. When songwriters pointed this out, consumers and younger bands mocked them for being luddites or anti technology. A part of me finds all this amusing as younger bands and music consumers have now figured out that we were right all along.
