Eruption- Van Halen- Cover for Violin and Guitar by Nina D, Jason Neubauer and Femmes of Rock (LIVE in Jamestown)
I believe this was my first live performance of Eruption on one of our tour dates. That’s always the test when you’re doing something there’s no formula for- transitioning from your controlled studio environment where you can isolate each sound, to live performance where “is that CAT5 cable noisy??” can change your tone.
I don’t like to cover anything in my videos that I can’t reproduce live. This posed a challenge especially because the settings I need to achieve finger tapping on the violin will amplify ANY noise in any of a hundred cables and connections that’s not perfect. Often, you’re at the mercy of the house venue for a lot of that. A power circuit that isn’t totally clean, which XLR is bad, etc.
I’ve spent a good deal of time since this performance taking out as many “what if” factors as possible in our touring gear.
Eruption used to be our guitarist’s feature, so we chose to try it as a duet. Jason, who plays many of our northeast shows, is a virtuoso. I’ve heard very few people perform with as much rhythmic and technical accuracy while still being extremely musical. It’s a joy to perform with him!
