My paper with Chris Cummis "Arguing with numbers on social media" is out (open access). In the paper we ask a simple question, can a visual graph encode an argumentative agenda when this is not explicitly expressed in the written text? journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.…

Our analysis suggests that language is necessary for setting up the argumentative context for graphs, even when it does not explicitly encode evaluative meaning. Interlocutors are very adept at inferring the argumentative agendas based on very little multimodal information.

Pleasantly surprised to discover that my honours student Sophie Anderson has received this year's Angus Mactintosh Prize for her project on pointing gestures across vlog genres. 😆 It is one of those moments that make you feel that your life is not completely wasted..🥹🥹

Our @BAAL SIG (baallangnewmedia.wordpress.c…) is looking for new convenor (replacing me) and event coordinator! I have served on both roles and they helped me to build up a community in the UK as a "foreigner" ;-) ! Do put your hands up 🙋‍♂️🙋🙋‍♀️.

Strange how random facts of one’s life entangle with the history of institutions, nations and one’s field. It almost gives one an illusion of destiny. Luckily, the urge of moving to a warmer and sunnier place soon takes over 🤪
