Wong Calls for Schools Chancellor to Step Down
Education Committee member says mounting investigations, failed judgment, and broader DOE mismanagement have undermined confidence in the chancellor’s leadership.
New York, NY — Council Member Phil Wong (D-Queens), a member of the Education Committee, issued the following statement:
“Chancellor Kamar Samuels has lost the confidence of public school parents, educators, and school administrators. Ongoing investigations into his conduct and the possibility of criminal exposure mean his first priority will inevitably be his own legal and political survival, not the needs of our 900,000 students. With a $180,000 no-bid contract under investigation, Samuels’ own acknowledgment of a ‘lapse in procedure,’ and sworn testimony that the probe made a vendor the scapegoat instead of holding senior officials accountable, New Yorkers can no longer trust his judgment or his explanations. At the same time, the Department has rushed an AI rollout with limited public input and presided over a botched online state math exam that left students locked out of testing. These are not isolated mistakes but signs of a deeper failure of leadership, and for the good of our students and schools, Chancellor Samuels should step down.”
