Former Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle: “They should put every salary online. So the people know what the government’s costing them. Back in 2008, the average total compensation was $100,000. And the average resident was making around $40,000 a year.” sun-sentinel.com/2023/01/22/…

Salaries paid with taxpayer money are public records in Florida. Reporters and watchdog groups routinely examine payroll data, pension costs, overtime and compensation packages. Taxpayers have a right to know how public funds are spent.
Commissioner John Herbst was angry we spotlighted city salaries. Told him it wasn’t personal. Just doing my job. He said, “Yeah, just like a terrorist walks into a church or mosque with a bomb and kills people. He’s just doing his job. It’s not personal.” sun-sentinel.com/2023/01/22/…

Would the same people who object to journalists scrutinizing public payrolls because it makes employees uncomfortable also object to a government-led scrutiny of spending and compensation? Doesn’t public spending deserve examination, no matter who’s doing it?

Florida DOGE team turns its focus to Fort Lauderdale. Some are wondering why. Is it because of the scathing audit on city-issued credit cards? Salaries and new hires at City Hall? The pricey City Hall tower in the works? sun-sentinel.com/2026/06/11/…

Another bright light is leaving the Sun Sentinel due to yet another round of layoffs. But like all the other bright lights, we will see him swagger into a new arena. You had a great run @davehydesports. All the best.
My 36-year run at the Sun-Sentinel is over. Laid off for the first time since I lost my job as an ice-rink skate guard at 17. Cost-cutting move then, they said, too. I'm a month from 65, so please keep any sympathy for my newspaper friends who didn’t make it to the finish line like I have. I’m looking forward to doing some things I want to do so before the hall narrows and the light dims so you might not be completely done with me yet. Thanks to everyone who made it such a fun run.

Now I’m told @BenSorensen and his aides Vicki Gargano and Sabrina Javellana are moving out of their offices into another building due to a tiff over the Ring camera. Camera was installed by Scott Wyman in response to the eavesdropping incident.
Lots of chatter at Fort Lauderdale City Hall about chief of staff for @BenSorensen (Sabrina Javellana) getting caught eavesdropping outside office door of chief of staff for @DeanTrantalis. Incident prompted Scott Wyman to install a Ring camera outside his door.
