Arabic words for the different stages of sleep (according to @almaanycom YouTube channel) 1- As-Sinah (السِّنة) The very first trace of drowsiness that affects a person's eyes without reaching the heart. Allah says: لَا تَأۡخُذُهُۥ سِنَةࣱ وَلَا نَوۡمࣱ "Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep." 2- An-Nu'as (النعاس) The state in which a person begins to feel the need for sleep, causing the head to droop and the senses to become sluggish. The arab used to say; الشخص الذي لا يغلبه النعاس يقال له شديد جفن العين، صبور على السهر a person who is not overcome by drowsiness has "strong eyelids" and can endure staying awake for long periods. 3- Al-Wasan (الوسن) The beginning of sleep, or the intense weariness that precedes it. A poet said: لها بَشَرٌ مثل الحرير ومَنطِقٌ...رخيمُ الحَواشي لا هَذاءٌ ولا وسن "Her skin is as soft as silk, and her speech is gentle and melodious, neither rambling nor marked by drowsiness." 4- At-Tarniq (الترنيق) The mingling of sleep with the eyes due to severe exhaustion. The linguists say: رَنَّقَت عينه "His eyes became tarniq," meaning drowsiness mixed with them and their gaze weakened from intense fatigue or hunger. 5- Al-Kara and Al-Ghumud (الكرى والغموض) A transitional state between sleeping and wakefulness. The poet said: وَسْنانُ أقصدني بلحظٍ كَحيلِهِ... إن الكرى لم يجن مثل جنونه "The drowsy one struck me with his darkened glance; even slumber has never produced such madness." 6- At-Taghfiq (التغفيق) When a person falls asleep while still hearing the people around him and their conversation, yet is unable to respond. In the dictionaries: غفق فلان غفقة "So-and-so had a brief doze," meaning he slept while still hearing the conversation. 7- Al-Ighfa' or Al-Ghafw (الإغفاء أو الغفو) A light sleep interrupted by brief moments of wakefulness, like someone dozing on a train or while sitting on a bus seat, then suddenly waking up. 8- Al-Qaylulah (القيلولة) A short midday nap whose benefit is to restore the body's energy and refresh the mind during the day. 9- Ar-Ruqad and At-Tahja' (الرقاد والتهجاع) A long and restful sleep. Allah says surah Al-Kahf: وَتَحۡسَبُهُمۡ أَیۡقَاظࣰا وَهُمۡ رُقُودࣱ "You would think them awake while they were asleep." 10- Al-Huju' and Al-Hujud (الهجوع والهجود) Sleep specifically during the night, in which the body becomes completely still. Allah says in describing the righteous: كَانُوا۟ قَلِیلࣰا مِّنَ ٱلَّیۡلِ مَا یَهۡجَعُونَ "They used to sleep but little of the night." According to the lexicons, huju' carries the meaning of complete stillness and inactivity, much like animals during winter hibernation, when bodily movement ceases and the body becomes fully relaxed. 11- As-Subat (السُّبات) Deep, restful sleep that represents complete repose for the body. The word is derived from the idea of cutting off, because movement ceases during it. Allah says: وَجَعَلۡنَا نَوۡمَكُمۡ سُبَاتࣰا "And We made your sleep a means of rest." 12- At-Tasbikh (التسبيخ) Complete and profound immersion in sleep. The language scholars say: سبخ الناإم. "The sleeper entered tasbikh," meaning he became completely absorbed in deep sleep from which nothing could awaken him, as though he had entirely disappeared from the world.

As we sleep peacefully in our beds tonight, children who have barely had the chance to understand what life is, what safety is, or what the world could have been for them, are enduring horrors beyond comprehension in the hands of terrorists. They are crying for help that never comes, waiting for rescue that never arrives, and suffering through nightmares no human being, let alone a child, should ever know.
