We have a model that uses tracking data to estimate how a play might end. Of the 75 threes attempted in Game 4, there was only *ONE* where the most likely outcome at the moment of the shot release was an offensive rebound:

This year's "Kobe Assist" leaders.
"THE KOBE ASSIST". In 2012, Kirk Goldsberry unveiled a unique statistical phenomenon where 15% of Kobe Bryant's missed shots led directly to points. Kobe's perimeter gravity was so immense that his heavily contested shots regularly drew double and triple teams, leaving opposing defenses completely out of position to box out. In many instances, Kobe would deliberately attack a defense knowing his trailing big men possessed the rebounding advantage. Goldsberry calculated that Kobe's team scored off 15% of his misses, meaning that a league leading 54% of his total shot attempts resulted in points. Kobe Bryant didn't care about FG%. Kobe Bryant cared about WINNING.

During the first two games of the Finals, Victor Wembanyama has rolled 47 times as the screener in pick actions. At least one of New York's off-ball defenders has tagged Wemby on 27 of those rolls, allowing him just two touches on those plays and only one point.
If you want to know why the Knicks have a 2-0 lead, watch what's going on away from the ball. Wemby wasn't shut down in the first half because the moment was too big. Rather, it was a disciplined gameplan by the Knicks to aggressively tag and disrupt his rolls. Turn 🔊 on:

The Spurs were 62 with Victor Wembanyama on the court during the Western Conference Finals (net rating of 10.7 points per 100 possessions) and -36 when he was on the bench (net rating of -18.7). It was one of the most impactful conference finals performances of this century.

Paint Touches 🤔
The best offenses track paint touches obsessively because most elite offense begins with collapsing defensive structure. A paint touch forces the low man to rotate, weak side defenders to stunt, and perimeter defenders to shift their positioning. One drive can trigger 3-4 defensive reactions before the ball is even shot. This is why spacing matters so much. Dunker spot positioning, shake action, slot lifts, drift spacing, and relocation shooting all exist to punish help defense once the paint is touched. Basketball at the highest levels is often about forcing one defender to make two decisions simultaneously.
