The beginning of the end for Christopher Luxon? 📍 Tonight’s 1News–Verian poll puts him at just 20 percent in the preferred PM stakes — a staggering 8 points down on his peak of 28% 12 months ago, and his lowest rating since becoming Prime Minister. That also brings with it the dubious honour of the weakest result for a sitting PM in more than 30 years. His every move — from scripted soundbites (“what I’d just say to you is”) to smug corporate speak, and above all his ongoing failure to genuinely connect with everyday New Zealanders — only reinforces what a walking disaster he is. This was made painfully clear again with yesterday’s tone-deaf, taxpayer-funded helicopter ride up a snowy mountain to film a cringe-worthy “let them eat pav” social media stunt. Yet unless we’re all missing something, there doesn’t appear to be any clear alternative, no Plan B. Literally no successor with the presence or credibility to stem the bleeding. That leaves National adrift, floundering toward the 2026 election with a leader who can’t move the numbers or inspire the base. Somebody said to me earlier: “God speed!” — frankly, I’m not even sure he can help them at this point. It’s clear from the numbers that National Party voters’ buyer’s remorse is now turning into full-blown regret and simmering frustration — the kind that doesn’t just dent enthusiasm but has now hardened into serious talk of replacing Luxon altogether.
