ALT Has there ever been out footballers in the UK? LGBTQ History month - SAYiT
ALT There are currently no 'out' footballers in the UK’s top tiers in the men’s game. Whilst it isn’t easy to be out in the women’s game, we do have examples of ‘out’ professional players as far back as Lily Parr who was a proud lesbian and played for Dick, Kerr Ladies from 1920.
ALT Justin Fashanu (19 February 1961 – 2 May 1998) was an English footballer. He was known by his early clubs to be gay, and came out publicly later in his career, becoming the first professional men’s footballer to be openly gay. Fashanu was also the first Black footballer to get a £1 million transfer fee, with his transfer from Norwich City to Nottingham Forest in 1981.
ALT Fashanu agreed to an exclusiveto come out as gay. They ran the headline as "£1m Football Star: I AM GAY". Fashanu later said that he wasn't fully prepared for the backlash that followed, and his career in football suffered "heavy damage". No club offered him a full-time contract after the story. Sadly, Justin Fashanu died in May 1998, he took his own life. The Justin Fashanu Foundation founded in his memory.
