Explore Psyche, the metallic asteroid! Unlike any other celestial body, it's predominantly metal and may answer questions surrounding planet formation.
As ASU's mission nears the Oct. 5 launch, here's why researchers are interested in #MissionToPsyche:
ALT "Why this asteroid?" and "Why NASA has their sights set on Psyche."
ALT 1 Exploring a metal world. Psyche might be the partial core of a shattered planetesimal, the first building block of a planet. It's the only planetary body we know of that is made not of rock or ice but of metal.
ALT 2 A window into the Earth's core. Since Earth's core lies unreachably far below the planet's rocky mantle and crust, Psyche may be the only way humans will ever gain insight into how rocky worlds are formed.
ALT 3 First surface photos (for the gram) Humans have never taken a picture of the surface of a metal object. We don't know whether pieces of the asteroid are metal or if they are large flat plains or broken up by faults.
