Also a huge night for the Big Ten. The SEC has had different teams win the national championship in this century--Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Florida. Auburn. (with a nod to Tennessee in 1998) Now, the Big Ten has won the last three with three different teams--Michigan, Ohio State, Indiana. Watch out for Oregon next year. With all their young guys, 2025 was really a year early for them to get to the final four. Next year they will be loaded to make a run to the title too.

Indiana will make a great movie for sure! The here will be the QB who was hit so hard early that he was spitting blood, then scored the game-winning TD on a physical run that beat five defenders. But it can't be called Hoosiers 2. What would you name this movie? #IndianFootball #CFP #Hoosiers

Undefeated Indiana beat Ohio State in the Big Ten champ game, then crushed Oregon by five TDs in the CFP. The Big Ten used to be known as the Big 2 (Michigan, Ohio State) plus 8. For this year, it is the Big 1 plus 17. Indiana was the program with the most losses in college football history when Curt Cignetti arrived last year. Now, they are the undisputed kings of the best conference in the nation. Just. Wow. @IndianaFootball

This was fun! At @BYUfootball I used peanut M&Ms to diagram blitzes we might face in the next day's games. Sports Illustrated did a six-page feature on our offensive line with this as the intro, called "Beware of the Candy Men."
Defense so good it deserves a sweet breakdown 🍬🔥 @TMatich uses M&M’s to show how Miami got it done in the Cotton Bowl 💪

Looking over the horizon, there's another reason moving from @BYUfootball to @UMichFootball would be attractive for defensive coordinator Jay Hill. It would put him in a strong position for consideration to become the next head coach at Michigan when Kyle Whittingham retires. That's what happened with new Utah head coach Morgan Scalley. He was Kyle's defensive coordinator, and for years was also the Utes' head coach in waiting. Kyle is of an older generation than Kalani Sitake, who could be at BYU for another 10 or 20 years. The possibility for Jay to elevate from DC to HC would likely come sooner at Michigan than BYU. The biggest reason to stay at BYU: It's a special place, where spiritual development is fully integrated into the program. It's an amazing environment to make a life and raise a family. deseret.com/sports/2025/12/2…

Mark Jones' call at the end of the Pop Tarts Bowl might be the most "BYU" call ever. He said the INT in the end zone to seal the Cougars' win was "atonement and redemption" for Evan Johnson. Johnson gave up a long pass on 4th down in the final moments to give Georgia Tech a chance to win it, then picked off Haynes King in the end zone on 4th down to seal the win. Classic! I guess "sealing the win" can be BYU too...

Five of them went for 20 yards or more, and another was a 4 yard TD run by Trinidad Chambliss. 1st drive plays: 30 yd pass 25 yd pass 20 yd run TD Kewan Lacy 2nd drive: 30 yd run 36 yd pass 0 yd run 4 yd run TD Chambliss What a start! @OleMissFB #CFBPlayoffs

When Oklahoma beat Alabama in the regular season, their defense was like Chris Angel, Mind Freak. Except here, you get hit at the end of the illusion. Here's what it looked like... #CFBPlayoff #BoomerSooner

If you were emperor of college football, and could wave a wand and make it so, how would you structure the playoff process? All the anger over the way the committee arrived at the field of 12 is bad for the sport. CFB is supposed to be joyful and passionate, with highs and lows from what happens on the football field, not a hotel conference room. For now, a simple thing would be to go to 16 teams sooner rather than later. It's easier to argue why #17 and #18 shouldn't be in than to argue why #11 Notre Dame and #12 BYU should be left out. What do you think?

One of the things I love about CFB is the debates. Rarely is someone completely wrong or right, there are usually good points on both sides of most issues. Its fun to respectfully argue it out! But some people are so brilliant at making a logical point to support their side, that every other argument just fades, like the moon when the sun rises. The guy below makes just such a celestially overpowering, unassailably logical argument to prevail in a meeting of the minds. Behold sheer brilliance...
Replying to @TMatich
Probably better that you sent the Mrs. to accept your induction into your alma mater's hall of fame. I get having to hold the company line even if it is dishonest.

Okay, the committee chose door #2 (below), or at least close to it. It was the right call. It came down to Alabama, Miami and Notre Dame for two spots. It was absolutely the right call to rank Miami ahead of ND, because of H2H. If you disagree, you're just flat wrong. So, Bama vs ND. Bama was ranked ahead of ND last week, and would have stayed there without question if they hadn't played in the SEC champ game vs #3 Georgia. ND"s last game was, um, Stanford, and they didn’t have the risk on championship weekend that Bama did because they didnt play. Yes, Bama got smoked. But choice #2 below was to honor champ games. ND had a playoff-worthy season. But there are only 12 spots, and they were first team out. It was the correct call.

We'll find out today what the committee thinks about a choice between two bad options. 1. Reward a team that didn't play in it's conf champ game, at the expense of a team that did play but lost. 2. Don't use a loss in a conf champ game in the ranking process. Both options have a lot to hate. I think we should err on the side of favoring conf champ participants. What do you think?

BYU got sandwiched between two unfortunate things. 1. They were ranked too low entering championship week at #11, even though they were 11-1, with the only loss on the road to a top 5 team. If they were ranked several spots higher, as they should have been, the conf champ game loss would have been treated like Bama's loss to Georgia, and they would likely have stayed in the top 10. Because BYU was ranked outside the cutoff for at-large bids (10th), they had no way to move up if they didn't win. 2. Even though they finished at #12, they got bounced by Group of 5 champions Tulane and James Madison coming from way back in the rankings, because of the automatic bids. They made the top 12, but weren't in the 12 team playoff. (I'm okay with that process, but its frustrating for BYU and #11 Notre Dame fans)
