ALT A vertical composition from atop a rock outcrop at Kyburz Flat in Sierra County, California, takes in both the marsh below and the full height of the sunset sky above. The gap along the horizon where the cloud layer breaks allows sunlight to push vertically upward into the frame, a warm column of light rising into the darker cloud mass overhead. Marsh grasses and open water occupy the lower portion of the image, the elevated position showing more of the wetland than the shoreline allowed. The vertical framing was a decision the sky made, not the photographer. June, Sierra County.
