Today is International Overdose Awareness Day. Today we remember those impacted by overdose, including the families, friends, and communities left behind.
The drug toxicity crisis remains an urgent public health issue in our city. This is especially seen in our shelter system, where acute drug toxicity remains the leading cause of death for people experiencing homelessness. Toronto shelters offer harm reduction supports which include wellness checks, enhanced overdose response measures, and referrals to substance use treatment programs.
The Toronto Sign and CN Tower will be lit purple in remembrance of those who have lost their lives to overdose.
