Tonight I'm on @bbcfreethinking with three other academics and writers who are working with the legacies of the Holocaust. I came away having learned a lot, and it was a privilege to share a snapshot of my current research as part of the conversation. bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001h69…

Lately it's been impossible for me to sit down for longer than 4 seconds without my lap being filled by 3.5kg of purring cat. This is all very lovely except for her desire to have full editorial control of my work, which means every 10 minutes she tries to knead the keyboard.

One good thing to emerge from this pandemic is the array of online learning. It used to be almost impossible to find a Yiddish class in the UK outside Oxford and London. If you've always wanted to learn Yiddish (and of course you have) here's your chance. yivo.org/Classes

It's accommodation letter season, so I'm here to remind you that you are REQUIRED to provide students the accommodations they're officially entitled to, and that you are ALLOWED to provide even more accommodations and flexibility!

I start out lawful good, then descend into the latter chaos when I get bored of interrupting my narrative flow. Then I sit up all night before the deadline with caffeine-dilated pupils as I frantically try to get them all done.

Are you a "write footnotes as you go" type of academic or an "add all footnotes at the end" type of academic?

(This is why I've always hated automatic deduction of marks for students submitting eight minutes after the deadline. I see the submission time recorded in red on Turnitin, I know exactly what happened there, I telepathically send my sympathies.)

The decisive factor in choosing which journal to submit to that no one ever acknowledges: the referencing style required and whether it is terrible or not terrible.

Sajid Javid says we need to pay £20 for a GP appointment and £66 to go to A&E as a way to solve the NHS funding crisis. He’s wrong because there are so many better options in my new report on funding the NHS. A thread…..

David Baddiel casually referred to Gypsies as p*keys on national TV, so I shouldn't be surprised he's calling a Gypsy charity antisemitic for hosting a memorial event dedicated to Gypsy victims of Nazism, but somehow he manages to undercut even the lowest of low expectations.
In attacking There and Back Again, a small GRT group, David Baddiel has: - lowballed the number of Roma & Sinti murdered in the Holocaust - falsly denied that Roma & Sinti were systematically annihilated as racial enemies - accused them of "softcore Holocaust Denial"

I have had a breakthrough with my current albatross. The chapter on forced disappearances needs to be blended with the chapter on ethical challenges to memory! I can't think why I didn't notice this before, but it's already flowing SO MUCH BETTER.

Gotta love hardworking people like Ciaran here! 4 jobs! A postman, ambulance driver, train driver and a nurse! Over £300,000 in wages a year over his FOUR TOTALLY REAL JOBS! What a guy!

I'm surrounded by half-started writing projects and struggling to manage them. Can anyone recommend a good app for this? Is Scrivener worth paying for?

My temperature is back to normal, but my sinuses still feel as if they've been plugged with cement and a cheese grater seems to have got stuck in my throat. I can't focus on anything except tea. Please send light-hearted reading recs that don't involve much attention span. 🤒
