Indie producers can still make movies like “Obsession” cheaply in the U.S. by shooting nonunion.
The breakout horror hit filmed in L.A. for just $750,000, but as domestic production slows, IATSE has been pushing harder to “flip” nonunion projects — driving up costs.
“The films I grew up making, for $500,000 or $1 million, the unions are really interested in having those be signatory projects,” producer David Kaplan says.
