X can still surprise and inspire. Great post from @StanCollymore. 👏👏👏
1200 men have played for England. I'm guessing 900 are dead. That leaves 300. Out of those 300 I've seen 1 England player as a regular at England games with a flag. Me. So it's not 1200 men, it's 1. Beckham, Rooney and Co ( rightly) get the Royal treatment. I just want a Cat 3, behind the goal with my mates and a flag.

Final bullet is interesting here. IMO, Labour will always be a viable political vehicle. And it will be much more viable still once it has a new leader.
🚨 The HuffPost UK weekend read on the week that made Keir Starmer's exit from N0.10 inevitable. 💥 How Andy Burnham is heading for a "coronation" if he wins in Makerfield. 💥 Burnham allies are already gathering MPs' nominations so he can move quickly to oust the PM. 💥 But a Burnham defeat could trigger a "Hunger Games" style leadership race, with Ed Miliband and Yvette Cooper among those in the frame. 💥 The Burnham campaign are focusing on the 16% of voters who have yet to make up their minds. 💥 But a former Starmer aide warns: "The bigger question is whether the Labour Party is a viable political vehicle if Andy Burnham can’t win Makerfield." huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/k…

One thing that struck me being out on the doorsteps (or high-street) with Rupert Lowe today. Nigel Farage is wrong. People do know who Lowe is. Not entirely sure how. But it was surprising how many people were coming up to him unprompted.

Hmm. Still all to play for then, if this is a good reflection.

I’m finding posts from @Steven_Swinford to be the most illuminating on this platform.
EXCLUSIVE from @oliver_wright Keir Starmer was blindsided by John Healey's resignation as defence secretary because he was far more worried about Ed Miliband and Rachel Reeves   Miliband was on “resignation watch” after he refused repeatedly to meet Starmer to discuss planned cuts to his net zero agenda. The fear was that the energy secretary would use the announcement to quit and publicly throw his weight behind Burnham   Extraordinarily No 10 was also worried about Rachel Reeves, the chancellor, who had been strongly arguing for a much smaller defence uplift of “single figure billions”   Reeves was said to be so angry about the move to take money from other departments’ spending plans to top up defence that she had refused to take part in the process of drawing up the cuts   While her allies said Reeves had worked “constructively” on trying to find the money, tellingly it was No 10, rather than the Treasury, that negotiated cuts to infrastructure budgets.   “It went well beyond what Rachel wanted,” said one No 10 source. “John [Healey] knew how difficult it was and how hard the prime minister worked to get it up to £13.5 billion.” Our weekend read on how John Healey’s resignation blew a hole in Keir Starmer’s survival strategy: Healey’s resignation is deeply damaging for two reasons. First, until now, Healey has been as loyal as they come, resolutely defending the prime minister time and again on the broadcast rounds But far worse was the timing. Starmer’s whole survival strategy was predicated on playing up his national security credentials. The plan had been to launch Dip before next week’s G7 summit at Evian in France and use the event to present Starmer as the man who could take the “big decisions to make the country safe” It was deliberately designed to contrast Starmer with the inexperienced mayor of Greater Manchester, giving Burnham and Labour MPs at least a few second thoughts about an immediate challenge Instead the prime minister heads to Evian with that entire strategy in tatters and a date with President Trump that could be excruciating “The survival plan has been totally demolished by Healey,” a senior Labour figure said. “Starmer’s strongest card was as the man who can take the big decisions to keep the country safe and Healey has accused him of putting the country at risk. It is hard to see how we go from here.” thetimes.com/article/fc89861…

Exclusive from @patrickkmaguire Restore Britain is set to hand Andy Burnham the victory in Makerfield, according to a poll of the constituency that will electrify the final days of the by-election campaign. The mayor of Greater Manchester is five points ahead of Reform UK in a race that remains too close for comfort with less than a week until ballots are cast, a survey by More in Common and the UCL Policy Lab suggests. It shows Labour’s lead over Nigel Farage’s candidate, Robert Kenyon — 45 per cent to 40 per cent — is smaller than the 8 per cent share for Restore Britain, the hard-right party led by Rupert Lowe, with more than one in ten voters yet to decide how to vote. thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…

🚨 Breaking - Britain’s economy went backwards in April. 📉 GDP fell 0.1% 🏪 Services fell 0.2% 🏭 Production was flat 🏗️ Construction rose just 0.1% Rachel Reeves promised growth. Instead, the economy is stalling. How much longer can Labour blame everyone else?

Healey's resignation is far more consequential on an issue of war and peace than Michael Heseltine's over Westland. That was about contracts, this is about whether the Treasury is going to adequately protect the country. Starmer clearly hasn't the clout to deliver what the armed forces need.
