Are You Leaking Marks in Your IELTS Essay? 🕵️‍♂️ Ever wonder what an examiner really looks for? It's not just grammar and vocabulary. It's about Examiner Logic – understanding how your essay is being scored against the Band Descriptors. In this series, we're going to pull back the curtain and mark a real student essay, showing you exactly where marks are gained and, more importantly, where they're lost. We'll focus on the common "leaks" that keep otherwise good essays stuck at a Band 6.0. We’ll break down: Task Response: Did you answer the whole question? Coherence & Cohesion: Does your essay flow logically? Lexical Resource: Is your vocabulary varied and accurate? Grammar Range & Accuracy: Are you using complex structures correctly? Follow this thread/series to see real examples and learn how to "plug the leaks" in YOUR writing! Download the full Essay Evaluation Checklist at teachingmrallen.com to get started.

How to Plan a Band 7 Essay in 3 Minutes ⏱️ Most students fail Writing Task 2 because they run out of ideas or time. The secret isn't writing faster; it's planning smarter. The 60-Second Brainstorm Strategy: Type Recognition: Before you write a single word, identify exactly what the prompt is asking for (e.g., Do you agree? What are the advantages?). Idea Generation: Spend exactly 60 seconds jotting down the first four ideas that come to mind. The Filter: Cross out the weak ideas. Keep only the two you can explain with specific examples. Structure: Assign those two ideas to your body paragraphs. Why this works: A clear plan ensures your "Coherence and Cohesion" score stays high because your essay follows a logical path from start to finish. Don't go into the exam without a system. One Complex Sentence to Jump a Whole Band. If you want a Band 7 in IELTS Writing, you can’t just write simple sentences. You need Grammar Range. The easiest way to prove this to the examiner? The "Although" Trick. The Formula:Instead of two simple sentences, combine your "General Trend" and your "Exception" using a subordinating conjunction. The Template: "Although most categories [Trend A], [Category B] actually [Trend B]." Why it works: It creates a Complex Sentence, which is a requirement for higher bands. It shows "Contrast," which is essential for a high-level overview. It keeps you from "Data Dumping" by forcing you to look at the relationship between two trends. The Drill: Bad (Band 5): "Coal fell. Solar went up. Wind also went up." ❌ Better (Band 7 ): "Although coal usage fell significantly, solar and wind power both saw a steady increase." ✅ Grammar Rule: Always put a comma after the first clause when starting with "Although"! Master your grammar range today. Download the Universal Template at teachingmrallen.com. 🌎

"Drill Time! ✍️" Look at these two facts: Eating out increased. Cooking at home decreased. Combine them into ONE sentence using the 'Although' trick in the comments! I'll grade the first 10!

Stop writing like a 90s textbook! 🤖📖I f your IELTS essays are full of words like "big," "good," and "bad," the examiner is going to cap your Lexical Resource at a Band 6.0. Why? Because those are "General" words, not "Academic" ones. Here is how to bridge the gap to 8.0. 🧵👇

I’ve spent 15 years marking IELTS papers. The secret to a 7.5 isn't using the longest words you know—it’s using the most accurate ones. Don't let "General English" create a score leak in your academic paper. 🛑

3️⃣ Stop saying "Bad." It’s too conversational. ✅ Use "Detrimental" or "Adverse." "The detrimental effects of pollution..."Notice how the tone instantly shifts from a student to a specialist?

2️⃣ Stop saying "Good." "A good way to solve this" sounds like a primary school student. ✅ Use "Viable" or "Feasible." "A viable approach to mitigating this issue..."This shows the examiner you have control over academic register. ✍️

1️⃣ Stop saying "Big." It’s vague. It doesn’t tell the examiner anything. ✅ Use "Substantial" or "Significant." Instead of "a big increase," try "a substantial growth in..."Precision = Points. 📈

Stop using "Firstly, Secondly, In conclusion." It’s a Band 6.0 habit that makes your writing look like a rigid, robotic template. 🧵 #IELTS #IELTSWriting

The secret weapon? Referencing. Instead of repeating the same nouns, use "This," "These," or "Such" to glue your ideas together. ❌ Pollution is rising. Pollution is caused by cars. ✅ Pollution is rising. This issue is largely attributed to...

Examiners call this "mechanical linking." It shows you can memorize a list, but not that you can actually write. To hit a 7.5 , you need Natural Cohesion.
