I am placing a significant general market hedge, as follows: Key Points: Today I've purchased S&P 500 puts expiring in November, January, AND February, representing about ~5% of net worth. Motivation: Concerns about potential volatility surrounding the upcoming election. Risk Assessment: I estimate a 15-30% chance of a 10-20% market sell off due to election uncertainty and/or US political instability post Nov 5th. Market Comparison: @IBKR Probability Lab (see screenshot below) shows only a 2-3% chance of a 10% S&P 500 drop by Nov 15th (probability increases to ~9-10% chance when switching to Feb/March expiries) Rationale: Hedging against potential market instability, despite being at all-time highs. Personal View: I acknowledge this hedge will more than likely expire worthless, but I feel it's a responsible precaution given the unique and historic political climate this country is going through in coming weeks and potentially months ahead. 🔭🔮I am not a Financial Advisor so the following is just me talking to my son who will read this in the future. 🎯🐒 On last week’s episode of @cyberbulls this monkey made an educated guess of what I thought was happening. I suspect there is more downside to test the 235 higher-high we got on 9/6 but since I can never time it perfectly I’m DCA’n back into the shares I sold around 260 in my trading accounts and if the 🐻 remain in control and buyers don’t step in I’ll just keep buying the tasty shares. I feel JOY on red 🔴 days and feel FEAR on green 🟢 days until the earnings force me to stop derisking my trading portfolio every time we pop. Pro-tip Son: do not throw long term (options) darts when the ticker is downtrending. I just stick to shares and maybe the furthest out leaps ATM if I’m feeling a little greedy. Always manage your greed. Think about how much money you can lose vs how much you can make.
