When exploring an organization certain individuals pop up. Whether they’re natural leaders standing out or perhaps persistent voices always presenting solutions or ideas, people find ways to set themselves apart from the “average.” And yet it can be very difficult to gauge how important and influential certain individuals within our organizations really are until we make that fatal mistake of taking them for granted.
There are very few people who become outspoken champions, or heroes of your team. People who deeply identify with your principles and values. People who literally carry the flag for you. Recognize them and put them in a position to help reach others both inside and outside of the organization. There’s an innate sense of passion and commitment that exists nowhere else. When you find these shining individuals within your team, do whatever it takes to keep them bought in. It would take a minimum of seven new good customer experiences to offset one bad one. I can’t express how much more this is magnified by your organization’s heroes who lose the path.
A great leader recognizes the value and depth of the individuals they serve, working to ensure that they are set free to fail safely. All too often we can get caught up micromanaging the process. Forcing our will upon the universe. There’s hundreds of ways to do the same thing. Depending on what the desired outcome, some paths become clearer and more logical than others. But nobody has solved this thing called life. There’s no optimal strategy. Just consistent principles and beliefs we constantly adhere to in the sea of chaos that is life.
Recognize your champions. Let them know how important they are. Do not let them slip away in our ignorance. These people are the lifeblood of our organization, they are actually the ones who have been pushing the others to be more.
