Gene Shalit leaves us at 100. A great run; the first host of PBS' Mystery (pre-dating Vincent Price!), and a regular reviewer back in the day for NBC. Nice guy, too.

Marriage is realizing that "I’ll do it in a minute" has no actual concept of time attached to it.

A Day at the Races is "almost" a great Marx Brothers movie. Too long, some of the musical numbers stop it dead, and it's a little unfocused. There's a cut musical number called Dr. Hackenbush which Groucho clearly loved, as he used to music whenever he could.
June 11, 1937: Marx Brothers' "A Day At The Races", directed by Sam Wood, is released in the USA.

I admire Rumble Fish more than I like it. One of the funniest moments in Shameless is when someone calls Mickey Rumble Fish.

For me Francis Ford Coppola’s Rumble Fish (1983) is an interesting failure but I admire his willingness in the 80s to ignore the conventional filmmaking rules and I love its odd feeling of unreality. At times it feels like a descent into Hell. My review: dfordoom-movieramblings.blog…

Seriously, I don't understand. Are people not allowed to be trillionaires? If I was a trillionaire, I'd be overjoyed.
Elon Musk just became the world’s first trillionaire. Let’s make sure he’s also the last.

I heard that rioting and violence was the language of the unheard. I must have misheard.
Politicians who fanned these flames should hang their heads in shame. Time and again we've seen this story play out. Single incidents used to fuel a far right narrative - and communities across the nation paying the price.

The Planet of the Apes TV series lasted a meager 14 episodes. We Were Robbed!
PLANET OF THE APES (1974): the biggest movie sci-fi franchise of the 70s (pre-Star Wars) launched an animated series, books, annuals, toys and games, and this TV series. Its oppressive, eerie titles, Lalo Schifrin's music, and the rifle-toting apes, really got to me as a kid.

Island at the Top of the World is an unbeatable adventure movie. In the Jules Verne tradition, it's one of Disney's best live-action films.
Watching.... Mako is so darn young in this. Compared to everything else. I never knew this movie existed before this week. Man I miss movies like this.

I don’t know about anyone else but I’ve found that too much wine makes me happy, too much beer makes me angry, and too much whiskey makes me sad

Real wisdom from @d4doome
Jun 11
The growing prevalence of the idea that books/movies about love are trivial coincided with the rise of the idea that serious books/movies have to be political. Personally I think politics is trivial and that there's no subject more important than love. And there's no subject more complex than love.
