At the last moment, ahead of next week’s action, the Government has moved and made a new offer for resident doctors in England. Strikes for 15–19 June have been called off while members vote on a new offer covering jobs, pay and progression. The choice is yours: Vote YES and accept the offer, or vote NO and return to escalated industrial action.

The BMA has agreed a derogation for 3 obstetrics shifts in Nottingham, due to their ongoing, though improved, difficult circumstances with ensuring safe staffing. Affected doctors will be contacted. Thank you to colleagues who were otherwise preparing to strike for pay and jobs.

New figures show nearly 3,000 NHS patients EVERY DAY are treated in corridors and other inappropriate spaces. This should be a source of national shame. We hope publishing these new stats, after joint work from the BMA and other orgs, makes it harder for the Govt not to act.

We remain horrified by the conditions endured by Palestinian healthcare workers arbitrarily detained by Israeli authorities, including Dr Abu Safiya. The @FCDOGovUK responded to our letter that called for their unconditional release. We continue to urge the UK Government to use all available leverage, alongside international partners, to ensure Israeli authorities uphold #IHL, release those arbitrarily detained, and ensure access to healthcare. Today we were out in Westminster and around London to remind Consultant and SAS doctors to vote YES and return their ballot before 29 June. After years of pay erosion, deteriorating conditions and a lack of recognition, it is time to demand better.

Polling shows the public value senior doctors working in the NHS, so why doesn’t the government? We’re campaigning for a reversal of real-terms pay cuts for consultants and SAS doctors, and improvements to their working lives. We want to keep senior doctors in the workforce and make sure patients get the best care possible. We are currently balloting consultants and SAS doctors in England for industrial action. Vote now and make your voice heard.

People are tragically dying each month waiting for treatment in our emergency departments. Meanwhile, 13 doctors are turned away for every one who gets an A&E training job. We need a sustainable solution to the workforce crisis. It will help to save lives. theguardian.com/society/2026…

Five of the world’s most respected diabetes researchers have reportedly been removed from a major conference, and threatened with arrest, after criticising US Government policy.

That should concern all of us, regardless of our politics. Science advances through challenge, debate and dissent. When researchers fear professional consequences for criticising government policy, the independence of medical research is at risk.

Academic freedom matters.
