The Narnia books get unfairly dismissed as children’s books, when in fact Lewis was paying homage to the medieval and Renaissance literature he taught and loved. The walled garden in The Magician’s Nephew is cribbed from the thirteenth-century poem The Romance of the Rose. The Lady of the Green Kirtle draws inspiration from the evil enchantresses in Spenser’s Faerie Queene; the green of her kirtle alludes to Thomas the Rhymer and Sir Gawain & the Green Knight. The whole series rings with echoes of Dante. Lewis was able to write a great work of literature because he had a mind utterly steeped in the classics.

BREAKING: FBI Director accused of BLOWING UP a sealed terror probe with one reckless social media post. Kash Patel just may have SABOTAGED an active counterterrorism investigation into a drone plot against the White House — because he couldn't resist posting about it on social media first. According to MS Now's Ken Dilanian, Secret Service officials are FURIOUS that the FBI director prematurely announced details of a SEALED, ONGOING criminal investigation into a plot to attack this weekend's UFC event with drones — and possibly snipers — on the White House South Lawn. Here's why this is so dangerous: at the time Patel ran to social media to brag, the case was sealed in court and roughly TEN suspects had NOT yet been arrested. The Secret Service and FBI had been working the case together, and had planned to make more arrests, unseal the case later that afternoon, and issue a JOINT statement. Patel torched all of it for a Twitter post. "We all woke up this morning to see this on Twitter," one stunned administration official said. The plot was uncovered when a relative of one suspect contacted Cincinnati-area police, reporting their family member was talking about a vague plot in DC. A Secret Service threat team, with FBI help, subpoenaed an encrypted Signal chat and identified the conspirators discussing drones and snipers. One suspect was arrested June 13th, and the case was IMMEDIATELY sealed so investigators could find and arrest the others. Then Patel blew the operation wide open. Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn called Patel out at a Tuesday news conference — pointedly without naming him: "I learned early in my career a phrase: 'Don't choke on your own smoke.'" Quinn emphasized the Secret Service "led that investigation from the beginning" and that they "chose NOT to leak it" to protect the investigation's integrity. In other words, the FBI director endangered a terror probe and roughly ten un-arrested suspects to feed his own ego. This is the same Patel accused of running a secret FBI slush fund to pay bonuses to MAGA loyalists, partying at the Olympics, and snorkeling over war graves. And now he can't keep a sealed terror case off Twitter. The man is a danger to national security — all because of an overly inflated ego (to match his boss’s) and a disturbing lack of maturity and competence. Please like and share if you think the FBI needs a new director with some actual law enforcement experience!

This is very revealing. Leading scientists have engaged with the government on the social media ban for under 16s and pushed against it. But as Prof Van Der Linden says, this is a political decision offering quick fix, which is not led by evidence. Typical of this knee-jerk, reactionary political project, which has cut a swathe through civil liberties.
The UK government has announced plans to introduce a social media ban for under-16s by spring 2027. Professor @Sander_vdLinden shares his reaction to today's news, and measures it against the evidence we already have about social media restrictions. Learn more about his proposal for social media passports 👉 youtube.com/watch?v=Y4RUNJVF… Professor Sander van der Linden is the Director of the Cambridge Social Decision-Making Laboratory and a Professorial Fellow of @ChurchillCol. #SocialMediaBan #SocialMedia

Quick comment: Very near the point of giving up on "X"... Blatantly obvious, & getting more-so, that free-speech (from us all round the world), is getting ignored, blocked, shadow-banned... It is also being "directed" to only showing certain views.... Not long to go, peeps...😡

Trump looked into the camera and said of the ballroom, “This is taxpayer-free. We have no taxpayer putting up 10 cents.” Three weeks earlier, his own contractor had already put it in writing. The ballroom would cost $600 million, with half of it from you, the taxpayer. Trump knew. He said it anyway. This administration has no problem shortchanging Medicaid or food for kids. But $300 million for a ballroom and a private bunker? Found that money instantly. I am an appropriator. I see the budget. This was never about what we can afford. It is about who they choose to spend it on. I will fight this in every hearing, every markup, every vote, until the last dime is accounted for. Most of my Republican colleagues are silent while the public is robbed in broad daylight. Where in the hell are they? wapo.st/4vOuwPD

Isn't it funny then, that I have no valid passport; only my driving licence to distinguish me?? 😂😂😂 And, golly, gosh! I don't use my phone for internet 😂😂😂 (Laptop, is another matter...😇)
😂 The UK social media ban will be "enforced at the device level". Everybody will have to upload their passport and face to Google/Apple to be able to use their own phone's internet connection! Will this also apply for tourists visiting the UK? What a dystopian madness.

They are doing these inside air-conditioned stadiums at night. Stop calling them 'hydration breaks', they are designed for adverts and corporations. It's the yankification of the sport. I'm so glad neither the BBC or ITV indulge in them.
Hydration breaks last just a total of six minutes during a match, but they stand accused of fundamentally changing the nature of football at the sport's ultimate showpiece.⚽ u.afp.com/Szfo

Remember this when they tell you 'the social media ban had wide support'. If you did the survey, and didn't like the plan, you literally could not say so. Gaslighting in broad daylight. You cannot loathe these people enough.
Public consultation survey had no clickable 'No' option to disagree with the social media ban, Labour then used this to claim public support.

We discuss on this week’s @RestIsPolitics - @donaldtusk observed recently that he couldn’t understand how a Russian backed arson attack on a 🇬🇧 PM’s home and property was treated like “Arsenal 2 Liverpool 1,” just a run or the mill event. Fair play BBC for their investigation but generally the lack of interest and concern underlines systemic anti Labour bias across most of media, and with large elements of the right backing anything thought to be had for Starmer, even if (in some cases especially if) it aligns with Russia China or anyone else who might want to damage Britain. Putin has plenty of useful idiots here
Seems bizarre to me that the press aren’t going bigger on the fact that Russia targeted Keir Starmer’s house and car. We are currently about to start a Leadership contest as Starmer is seen as unpopular, but no-one is discussing the clear Russian interference on social media.

🚨 For anyone tracking the under-16 social media bans in Canada and the UK, you might have noticed the government suddenly walking back some specific wording. They backed off forcing you to upload credit cards or facial scans because of the public backlash, and now they’re pushing a "backend token system". It sounds less intrusive on the surface, but here is the truth about what that actually means, because most people are being completely misled by that marketing: A cryptographic token isn't a magic, anonymous poker chip. To work, a token has to be anchored to something verified. That means your physical device, your phone carrier contract, or your real identity is permanently tethered to that token. Every single time your phone throws that token to let you log into an app, it logs exactly who you are, where you are, and what you're doing. It isn't a privacy shield to protect kids. It's a digital passport that tracks an adult's every move across the internet.

The kids who are being banned from YouTube literally do not have a BBC channel that is aimed at their age range. CBeebies is aimed at under 6’s CBBC is aimed at 6-12 year olds BBC Three is aimed at 16-34 year olds.

Including YouTube in the UK Social Media ban will be the main thing that makes them want to seek workarounds. How insulting it must feel for Keir Starmer to say these teenagers cannot be trusted with anything more highbrow than cbeebies.

The ban will be debated in Parliament. If we don't all stand together against this tyranny now, it will be pushed through no matter what. Keep talking about it.
