This fall, SCOTUS will hear oral arguments in Chiles v. Salazar - a case that will determine if a law that prohibits state-licensed mental health professionals from using dangerous conversion practices on minors violates the free speech clause of the first amendment.
Ultimately, conversion “therapy” hurts LGBTQ youth. Someone doesn’t choose to be a gay or trans – it is not a lifestyle or choice, and as such, no amount of talk or persuasion can make an LGBTQ person not LGBTQ.
Conversion therapy is a huge risk, because using a position of trust as a therapist to change an unchangeable part of someone puts kids at high risk of suicide attempts.
