(1/3) Our brand-new Summer Feel-good Fiction Bookazine will be on sale tomorrow! It's packed with summer stories from favourite 'Friend' authors, including: Penny Alexander, David Balmer, Kate Blackadder, Jane Burns, Alison Carter, Moira Smyth, Jacqui Cooper, Joanne Duncan...
Good morning! We're looking for very traditional pre-Christmas, Advent, Christmas and New Year stories for our weekly issues. Can be historical or contemporary. Around 2000 words preferred, but 3000 also welcome.
Hello! Just a quick message from the Fiction Team. We receive a HUGE amount of stories. We download them into folders for reading and it takes up precious time if we open your story and there are no details on it. PLEASE put your details at the top of your WORD document.
Calling all authors! We're currently looking for stories set in August onwards for our weekly, and from late autumn onwards for our Specials. We're also now ready to read Advent and Christmas stories to feature across all 'Friend' publications. All genres and word counts!
I've had the BEST day visiting the offices of DC Thomson in Dundee, where my weekly soap opera Riverside is published in @Thefriendmag The magazine is a powerhouse and I wouldn't be the writer and author I am without it.
Good morning! Just to clarify what we're asking for when it comes to submitting a story...
It must be on a Word document. Use single line spacing and no formatting. That's it!
(1/4) Hello! Everyone on the "Friend" is very busy, as you know, so from today onwards we won't be accepting submissions that have double line spacing or have formatting.
To remove formatting from your Word document, you can search on Google, or...
Yay! It's #WorldBookDay2026 Which is everyday for us! Lucy is reading "Vermeer: Lost And Found" by Andrew Graham Dixon, Tracey is reading "The Paying Guests" by Sarah Waters and Alan is enjoying "Adventures In The Screen Trade" by William Goldman!
What about you?
(1/2) Here's a shout out from the Fiction team!

(1/4) You can never have too many top tips when it comes to writing for the "Friend"! We have our own set of guidelines whether you're writing short stories, serials or Pocket Novels.
1. Read the magazine to understand the sort of stories we feature....
(3/4) 5. Stories can deal with challenging themes, but should still have a positive and feel-good outcome.
6. Include your details at the top of your submission, which must be a Word document.
7. As always, seasonal stories must be submitted six months in advance...
(4/4) 8. We don't publish children's stories or stories from an animal's viewpoint.
9. Please have your characters speak in the story! Dialogue is important...as is giving your main character a name.
10. We "read what we need" so keep an eye out on here for shout outs!
