In digital design, there's a secret trick that top designers swear by. A trick that helps apps get greater engagement with less design time. What is this trick? UI patterns. But what are they exactly? They are tried and tested solutions to common design challenges, so they have šŸ“±A common set of features šŸ” A common way to interact šŸ’¢ A common set of responses That means when your users see them, they instantly understand how to use them Still not convinced they are for you? Here’s 5 reasons I think you should adopt them Familiarity ↳ Users appreciate consistency; your app interface is quick to learn and Hours of design wisdom: ↳ Why start from scratch? UI patterns are the culmination of years of design expertise. User Confidence: ↳ Familiarity breeds confidence. When users encounter familiar UI patterns, they know what to expect Delivery speed: ↳ The time to re-use the wheel is a lot lower that the time to invent it Less errors: ↳ The more familiar the interface, the lower the chance your users will make errors Use UI patterns to get consistency into your designs in double time. What’s your top tip for driving quality in design?

Defining MVP scope (... how to keep the scope small and still deliver huge value) It’s a hard balance to strike You need to create a complete product but if you do everything, you’ll never launch This is the MVP challenge And it’s a tough one The best way we’ve found over many years and projects is to let discovery and design apply the constraints i.e. you have … - A clear understanding of the customer - A clear definition of the problem you’re looking to solve - A defined set of user needs (that support solving that problem) - A vision of a solution that addresses those user needs Creativity thrives within constraints. So create those constraints. Now the question becomes, what slice of that vision will still produce a complete product that you can evaluate Your vision will be a hierarchy - Customer journeys - Screens in those journeys - Features in screens in those journeys And now we cut - To the most critical user journey - With only the necessary screens to deliver it (replacing with manual options or external tools where needed) - And using the simplest version of each feature in the screens This is your MVP

Tailor-made project estimates (… how to get rough costs when you only have a rough idea using t-shirt sizing) Let's face it management loves estimates But they don’t love šŸ”Ž Details šŸ›‘ Caveats šŸ…±ļø And contingencies So how can you deliver something accurate without a DeLorean and a Flux Capacitor? Step forward t-shirt sizing. T-shirt sizing is a simple method to estimate the number of points and thus size of the elements within a new build. The basic process is… 1. Take your user needs 2. Define the features needed to support them 3. Give an estimate of how complex they are S, M, L, XL, XXL We now have features with complexity estimates, we need cost 1. Assign each entry a role 2. Assign all roles a day rate 3. Convert each size into a number of days S = 3, M = 5, L = 10 and so on Then let your favourite spreadsheet do the math! Hey Presto - estimates fit for a kingĀ  šŸ‘‘ Want to see t-shirt sizing in action (and get a free template to help build this out yourself)? Check šŸ‘‡šŸ‘‡šŸ‘‡

User testing: The game-changer for apps (... a low barrier to learn skill that will 10-100x your user base) Watching real users use your app can be a painful experience But there is hands-down no better way to know how to improve it It’s also surprisingly easy to get started .. here’s how: Define your goal ↳ What are you trying to improve - a starter for 10: pick your key user journeys Select your test participants ↳ Get a cross-section of users from your target audience - they’re the ones that want to achieve the goal Design scenariosĀ  ↳ Define tasks with background and objectives that achieve the goal Set up your test environment ↳ Have a test version of your app to complete the tasks - could be a paper prototype, lo-fi prototype or working app Run your tests (and observe) ↳ Have your participants attempt to complete the tasks - be quiet, observe, find points of frustration Identify common issues ↳ What did most users struggle with - these are your highest-priority improvements Implement and go again ↳ Make changes that will resolve your users' problems and test again User testing isn't just a step; it's a strategy. Embrace it, refine your apps, and watch user satisfaction skyrocket!

Stop wasting time covering low-impact questions on your user research calls. Use this structure as a strawman to save you hours in planning: Current role ↳ The user’s role (in the context of the problem) .. background for what follows Current Process ↳ The end-to-end process and what a typical day / week looks like as a result Decision points ↳ Any decisions that are made, how they are made, with what data, and what’s the next action Challenges and strengths ↳ What works well and what is painful in the current process External Interactions ↳ Who the user interacts with - people, teams, formal groups Regulations, governance, and responsibilities ↳ Any regulations to consider or reporting responsibilities, how the process is governed Critical KPIs and success measures ↳ What good looks like and how it is measured The voice of your users is the compass to your product's success.Ā  Great user interviews start from the right structure.

Would you look for your keys in the fridge? I might .. but of course, you clever people wouldn’t The thing is, a lot of healthcare brands do exactly this.Ā  They look for information about their target users and problem space in places they’ll never find it The result? Being unprepared for the user calls and design work that follows .. and ultimately a solution the ideal user doesn’t want to use.Ā  Thankfully, there is a wealth of wonderful sources of good research material available if you just know where to look Here’s a quick list of excellent sources I’ve found that’ll prime you for success (... and save you days in lost research) - Metrics and search terms - Day in the life videos or podcasts - Background research from clients - Reviews on related Amazon books - Case studies and reviews of competing products - Articles, interviews and perspectives from the environment Knowing where to start is half the battle P.S. What is your secret source? (See what I did there šŸ‘€)

The secret to better user interviews? .. Pre-research (it’ll save you from poor engagement, low sign-ups, and wasted dev time) But what does that mean? Learn a common language ↳ So you can speak the language your users understand Acronyms Organisations Technical terms Understand the environment ↳ So you know how your solution will naturally embed without friction What are the regulations? Are there reports to produce? How is work organised and governed? Understand common processes ↳ So you can attach any new knowledge to a mental framework What are the key steps? What decisions are made and actions taken? What information passes from person to person? Understand typical problems and challenges ↳ So you can take the conversation to a much deeper level What are key challenges users face? What is the impact in terms of cost and time? What are the workarounds the teams use to get by? Your user interview outcomes stand and fall on your research.Ā  Invest research time upfront and you’ll reap the rewards during user interviews

Replay your understanding throughout user interviews (you’ll prevent building the wrong product features and save tens of thousands down the line) We all know the feeling You listen You take notes You think, yep, I’ve got it Only to realise later that you missed a key point .. Or worse still not realise and build the wrong features into your product The trick? Echo back during user interviews ↳Replay your understanding of a process ↳Summarise an insight or clarify a finding ↳Walkthrough a potential solution on the fly Listen ā–¶ Echo ā–¶ Understand

Use KPIs to focus your user research (a simple approach I’ve found that’s saved my clients hundreds of thousands in wasted development fees…) What happens when you don’t? āŒ Increased costs from misguided focus areas. āŒ Distracted objectives, losing sight of primary goals. āŒ Missed opportunities to align research with business outcomes. But when you do … āœ… You target the most impactful user pain points. āœ… Deliver research that directly contributes to strategic growth. āœ… Ensure efficient use of resources, saving both time and money. Listen out for KPIs during user research šŸ’¬ Unpack each KPI during interviews šŸ”¢ Gather quantifiable data - money, time, volume 🧠 Hold them in mind during design and implementation Don’t let the KPIs pass you by! P.S. If you want to get an insight into the system we use to create high-engagement healthcare apps, check out the comments.

Shallow research results in shallow results. And yet 99% of brands only ever scratch the surface with their user research, and then wonder why their products don’t sell well. What’s the solution to generate deeper understanding and better results? Keeping an ear out for phrases that prompt a deep dive Here are my top 10 to listen out for … "It's always been frustrating..." ↳ Delve into what specifically causes the frustration. There might be latent needs and pain points to uncover. "We spend a lot on..." ↳ Costs can be financial, time-based, or resources. What's the perceived value, and are there inefficiencies? "This part actually works pretty well for us..." ↳ Identify what's going right. Why does it work, and can it be applied elsewhere? "We do this manually because..." ↳ Manual processes often hide opportunities for automation or optimisation. What's holding them back? "We had an incident where..." ↳ Incidents can expose critical vulnerabilities or shortcomings. Understanding their cause can prevent them from happening again in the future. "We've tried X before, but..." ↳ Past attempts at solutions can offer a wealth of learning. What worked, what didn't, and why? "I wish it could..." ↳ Whenever someone talks about their wishes, they're giving you direct insight into their needs. "It's a bit different for us because..." ↳ Unique scenarios or workflows can reveal niche problems (and solutions). "Most of the time, we..." ↳ Regular habits or workflows can uncover core practices and potentially latent inefficiencies. "Our biggest challenge has been..." ↳ Challenges are direct calls to action. Understanding them can pave the way for impactful changes. šŸ‘‚When you hear these phrases, lean in and ask more. Behind each one is a potential goldmine of user insights. Have you noticed any other key phrases from interviewees that prompt a deep dive?

NOT MY DESIGN — nevertheless I'm excited about this rebrand from @burberry. It really shows that beauty, excellence and history are never out of style. On the contrary, a detailed logo can set any branding apart and tell a truly inspiring story.
