Note the contrast between Clovis's sons practicing axe-throwing at a crude target / the long-haired Frankish retainers, against the elegant, ornate, marbled home of the Roman aristocrat they had taken over. To me, this painting is the perfect contrast between Roman and Germanic elite culture.
