In next cafe booth, a family raving about "amazing bookshop!" I start eavesdropping. I misheard. They are talking about an amazing porkchop.

There’s an article about us in @TheTyee today, so I’m posting on Twitter, which is where people who read The Tyee hang out (including me!) Thanks @pfbvan and @ThePaperHound for the unreasonably kind words! (My secret source of energy btw- I eat books!) thetyee.ca/Culture/2023/01/1…

Twitter was fun, though I guess i’ve stepped away from it lately. But if this is the end I would like to be remembered for this tweet 👇 and not the viral one about the wedding book bar.
Lord, make me the kind of bookstore this woman casually scanning the shelves for a true first edition of Dracula thinks I am.

In which The Hound finally catches the eye of the literary tastemakers of Uruguay! And Rod delivers an interview in perfect Spanish ;)

Thanks Rosario and @_Escaramuza for looking so far north for this profile!

3 types of book thief: 1. The one who re-sells for a quick buck 2. The one who just can’t afford the book they covet 3. The one in pursuit of physical truth about cosmic mysteries who gamely confesses to his crime in a baffling word salad. Anyways, we have all three. 🙃

I don't know who needs to hear this, but the price is always on the first page in the top right-hand corner in pencil.

Frequent Hound patrons will recognize the canine co-star of this video as our occasional shop assistant, Shelly! With "artist's muse" and "professional dancer" tacked onto "casual bookseller" his resume is already more impressive than either of us! exclaim.ca/music/article/nic…

According to his mother, my toddler friend just pointed to this dog and invoked my name:

Having neither ability nor inclination to generate that “Drake is revulsed / Drake approves” meme, let me just say that one of these BC Hydro Home Service Centre recipe pamphlets has a distinct sales advantage today, and the other is not for sale because I am using it as a fan.

At $6.99, this Bunnykins mug is well-priced at my local thrift store….but what could you serve in it to a child except for a cup of cruelty?! 😢

Mounting this near the till for easy tapping accessibility lest anyone try to engage us in the tired topic of “e-reader peril”. (It’s okay if you want to chat about microfilm though, we love obsolete technologies!)

Irony #1 is that the storefront looks like this today because they are filming next door at the restaurant….which has been set dec’d to be a bookshop.

Irony #2 is that we were promised “businesses open as usual signs” but instead we got “by existing in public you tacitly consent to us owning your image” signs. Maybe ironic is not the right word. Anyways, that’s showbiz, baby!

Care takes unusual forms in a transactional relationship, and in this case it was a longtime customer emailing to let me know in advance that he'd shaved his mustache so that I wouldn't be too startled when he showed up, and I'm glad he did: I would've fainted.

Guy just came in to apologize for shoplifting from us periodically over a 5-year period. Apology accepted, but please save any further confessions for tomorrow, which is Atonement for Crimes Committed Against Indie Bookstores Day. It is a completely separate holiday from #CIBD.

I can't believe I wrote "periodically over a 5-year period". Another Canadian Independent Bookstore Day humiliation.

Happy Indie Bookstore Day! In addition to our evening draw for lots of great prizes, remember that if you bring in a wire clothes hanger today I will personally bend it into a custom keepsake bookstand RIGHT BEFORE YOUR VERY EYES! This is what we call “a Paper Hound exclusive”.
