The Safe Library Tip #39 Code Pink Drills at Your Library. The most common Code Pink situation is when an infant or a child is taken from a hospital. Libraries face the same issue. @TheSafeLibrary TheSafeLibrary.com Library20.com #libraries youtu.be/V9V14_gGAkY

My day, everyday. @TheSafeLibrary
Coming out to relieve my coworker at the reference desk: "Any patrons I should worry about?" She's all "Let me save time and just tell you the ones you don't need to worry about."

The Safe Library Tip #41 When and How to do a Lockdown of Your Library. There are many situations that may require library leaders or staff to lock down the facility. One of the most common is a person threatening to return back inside with a weapon. All library staff need to know how and when to lock the building from threats, if it's not safe to evacuate others first. youtu.be/EtTz5kwrkbQ #Layla #libraries #librarians @TheSafeLibrary

@TheSafeLibrary Tip #42 Libraries can benefit from having certain critical supplies in every room they want employees or patrons to hide out in during the rare possibility of an armed attacker or an active shooter. A "Safe Room Kit" can include door wedges; door bracing bars; water and snack bars; blankets; a first aid kit with both a sufficient number of tourniquets and clotting bandages; a fire extinguisher; and if possible, a landline phone. This room should be able to keep the attacker out and protect those inside for the duration of the event. #Librarians #Libraries #LaylaBeagle

The Safe Library Tip #43 Social Media Acceptable Use Policies - Library employees love to communicate with each other, using various Intranet messaging tools, like Slack, Teams, and Google Chat. These internal conversations range from work-related, to gossip, to griping about bosses, co-workers, and patrons. These apps can also be used to harass, bully, or argue with co-workers, especially about political or social issues, where they disagree. It's important for library leaders to work with their IT teams to update their Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) for the safe, legal, and appropriate use of these tools. There is no expectation of privacy and the messages may be subject to a civil suit subpoena or a Freedom of Information FOI request. #libraries #librarians @TheSafeLibrary youtu.be/IqwTnfiSS3s?si=_4WN… v

Tip #45 The Library Employee's Ability vs. Willingness. @TheSafeLibrary Coaching Library Employees with Willingness, Ability, One, Neither, or Both. When it comes to coaching employees, two factors make a big difference in their future success: their ability and their willingness. Ability means they have the knowledge, skills, training, and experience to do the work. Willingness means they have the motivation, desire, and enthusiasm to do the work. There are four possibilities: Low Ability-Low Willingness; Low-Ability-High Willingness; High Ability-Low Willingness; and High Ability-High Willingness. Layla and I talk about all four here and the one you may think is the toughest to coach is not. youtu.be/YSzD4SE4LZE?si=h07J…

I certainly hope so and I do believe it. I’ve spent the past 24 years teaching service, safety, and security programs for dedicated, caring, loyal to their profession library people. @TheSafeLibrary
Do people still use their public library?
