Tom, you make a really valid point and one that I would wholeheartedly support👏
As I often say today, the “football starts at home” philosophy is like a master key, it unlocks every door along the journey from grassroots to national teams. When you build a strong foundation early on, anything becomes possible. Even when the youngest players are coached by well-meaning but inexperienced volunteer parents, those kids can still develop if their foundation is strong.
The problem is that the football world has convinced people that top players are created mainly at the elite level. That’s simply not true. The most important stage of development happens before a child even joins organized play. That’s where the real work happens, where habits are formed, skills are built, and intrinsic motivation is developed. That early stage sets a child on the path to practicing consistently, which we all know is essential to becoming good at this sport.
