GAbend (GMorgen) π€
Happy late midweek (schΓΆnen Mittwoch)
Perhaps you're in the middle of everything, in a sense, or between things β or neither, or both
I hope you may concurrently remain grounded in the present moment and free to step back for perspective
Viel Liebe π€π€
Some related things were part of the literal and conceptual underpinnings of my 819th daily piece.
The short version of the story:
I was standing on a crowded Park Street T Station platform in downtown Boston a number of years ago.
Except for me and one other person casually looking around, every person on the platform was bowed, gazing down into the glow of their phone screens. The two of us traded a brief glance and a nod as we both silently noted that we were two anomalies somewhat alone in a crowd.
So, what's my point, ja?
The crowd of around 100 or more people felt close by but far away, almost as though they were silent mannequins or stand-ins. However, each was singularly in their own moment β maybe locked in, as the saying goes. For them, perhaps there's perspective to be found in the glow, but they were seemingly missing that which was physically surrounding them. Maybe some were tired of seeing the same place.
It felt like the two of us were the only ones taking in the environment in which we found ourselves β the people, lights, tiles, rust, ever-present ads across the tracks, and perhaps the scents of grease and dust.
It's worth taking a few moments to look around sometimes.
In this case, it made for a persistent memory from a decade ago, and a conceptual touchstone to which I return periodically.
Nochmals viel Liebe π€π€
PS: Additional bits for the extra curious
β Ja, Park Street is a real station in the heart of downtown Boston
β I was actually standing on the Park Street Red Line platform, a little darker and further underground, but the Green Line felt better for this piece
β The real person was another man, but I took necessary liberties
β As was noticed by some, the title of this piece stems from a line in a Nine Inch Nails song, Head Like A Hole
β The original post is quoted below and I've included an image here with a bit of Fibonacci and Golden Mean markup. I sometimes use this approach for cropping and alignment, and the aspect ratio of this piece is a Golden Rectangle, at 1.618:1
