Sunday I thought I was rescuing a dying dog. I had no idea I was stepping into one of the most traumatic and heartbreaking situations I have ever witnessed in my life. The dog was collapsing in the Texas heat, severely dehydrated, bleeding from the mouth, and barely able to stand. A terrified little boy told us his father ordered him to tie her to a tree at an apartment complex with no food or water and “let her die.” I took the dog, believing at least one life was about to be saved. What I didn’t realize was that the child handing me that leash was silently begging to be saved too. The father screamed threats over speakerphone while we stood there. The boy was terrified to go home because he said he would be beaten for giving me the dog. Later that same evening, after police had already returned him home, he showed back up desperately looking for safety with people who actually cared about him. And this wasn’t just one child. He has two little sisters. According to what we were told, none of these children attend school, nor are they homeschooled. They reportedly cannot even properly read or write. Three of the boy’s own aunts reportedly backed up his story. The child alleged drugs were being sold out of the home and credit card fraud was taking place there. Officers spent HOURS trying to protect this child and pushing for him to be placed somewhere safe because they themselves did not believe he was safe with his parents. And yet somehow, CPS allegedly still left him there. Meanwhile, the little dog that was supposed to be left tied to a tree to die spent last night sleeping peacefully in loving arms, finally safe, fed, hydrated, and cared for. I cannot stop thinking about that little boy and his sisters tonight. Children should never have to run from home looking for strangers to save them. 🙏
