🤖 Artificial intelligence is being used in newsrooms to publish error-ridden stories with no human oversight. But journalists are drawing the line. Guild members have won enforceable AI protections in over 35 contracts — one of the only national frameworks for AI accountability

Last week, we approved our first contract with our owners, Alden Global Capital, after 5 YEARS of tense bargaining. We won more concessions than any other Alden-owned paper group has ever gotten despite their rigid opposition to more an increase in labor costs ✊ @newsguild

But the fight continues! While these wins are incredible, they don't represent the full scope of what our members want and deserve. Our journalists deserve to be treated with respect and to have an owner that is invested in their future.

Today we stand with other media unions worldwide and condemn the killing of journalists and media workers in Gaza. More than 100 workers have been killed since October, the deadliest time for journalists in decades. #SupportPalestinianJournalists @IFJGlobal

The narrative that media companies can’t be profitable in 2024 and therefore layoffs are a necessity needs to die. The problem is corporate greed across the board. Where did the money go?
Today at @Law360, our parent company announced record profits for 2023, and then our EIC laid off 10% of the newsroom. Horrendous.

Alden is making obscene money; we want fair wages to fight inflation, recognize our efforts to provide watchdog journalism and bring fairness to the gender, ethnic and racial disparities in pay. Alden needs to stop being stupid. Don't cut healthcare. Protect seniority.
Investigative reporter Ray Long went on strike because he hasn’t had a raise “in years & years & years” as Alden squeezes reporters and readers. “We want Alden to know that we will not buckle to their baloney and we’re ready to rock — harder & harder & harder.” — @RayLong

Reporter Caroline Kubzansky went on strike because young reporters like her stand to lose tons if our 401k match is cut. She’s ready to escalate because working here @chicagotribune was her dream. “But Alden is my nightmare." — @CKubzansky

Alden is “siphoning out all the money off of the backs of all of these journalists who are living paycheck to paycheck… The corporate greed in media is out of control, and hedge funds are at the core of that corporate greed.”
