I'm now working as a bioinformatician for CGEBM, which means I have the pleasure of teaching these courses. Come join us in Aberdeen and learn some bioinformatics 🖥️🦐
Announcing CGEBM Bioinformatics Courses for 2025/26. #genomics Courses 1-2 days, taught in person, training in #Unix/cluster computing, #genomeassembly , #RNAseq , #microbiome, other applications of short read sequencing. Full details on our training page: tinyurl.com/c5n9n6p4

I'm excited for my @eseb2025 presentation later today. I'm part of the symposium on the Genomic Basis of Evolutionary Innovations! I will have stickers to give out too (if bribery is required for attendance) 😁 #eseb2025 #sciart #eseb

A wonderful set of talks from all the new PhD students in our department and from three Research Fellows, lots of very varied, very cool research! @QUADRATdtp #SciArt #SBSresearchday

I think the picture got lost the first time, let 's try that again. Here are all 25 talks together!
I'm still buzzing after the @GenSocUK Meeting! Here are all 25 talk summaries together #SciArt #TEworldwide

A lovely end to the @GenSocUK Meeting, thank you for the best presentation prize! Today we had: 1) HUSH complexes suppressing young L1s; 2) TE insertions in centromeres; 3) My talk on amphipod TE and HSPs; 1/2 🧵

4) chromosome-level assemblies reveal chromosome structure evolution; & 5) centrophillic ATHILA retrotransposons in Arabidopsis 2/2 🧵 #TEworldwide #SciArt

Here are my favourite facts from the @GenSocUK Medal Talk and Balfour lecture. Of course much more fascinating information was also included 1) siRNAs cause the triploid block which kills triploid maize progeny, which are bad 2) Alternative approached to getting ancient omics seq

And with that the afternoon of @GenSocUK short talks is done! We've had: 1) KRABs binding L2/MIR elements, which would effect cardiovascular development; 2) DGCR8 prevents the accumulation of TE-made double-stranded RNA; 1/3 🧵

3) Integrase searches for the AC40 pol-III domain, if the AC40 domain is removed Ty1 can no longer integrate; 4) The interphase of endonuclease, Cryptic, reverse transcriptase and CTD from ORF2p of L1;  2/3 🧵

5) single molecule arrays to capture ORF1p as a marker of cancer; 6) The ORF1p derived L1TD1 allows and contols L1s. 3/3 🧵 #SciArt #transposons

4) TE can create introns, longer TE-made introns are more detrimental; 5) SPIN1 and SPOCD1 control young LINE1s in the germline; 6) low GC content may help TE "hide" from piRNAs. 2/2 🧵 #sciart #TEworldwide
Another great set of @GenSocUK talks: 1) AFD neuron disruption in C. elegans results in an increase in Tc1 elements; 2) conserved LTRs generate extracellular sRNA; 3) effects of methyl-6-adenosine can be good or bad, depending on external factors; 1/2 🧵

A wonderful start to the @GenSocUK Transposon meeting! We've had: 1) TE acting as gene switches, 2) CELLO-seq, 3) circular DNA and structural variations, 4) KRAB zinc finger proteins and pancreatic development, 5) epigenetics and KRABs in mice, and 6) pack-CACTA #TE #SciArt

At EMPSEB29, we were completely blown away by @TillySScott 's amazing drawings! We simply had to ask her to design the logo for us! So thank you very much!🤩 And now for something really fun! Can you guess the connection between peas, biology, and the Czech Republic? 🫛🧬🇨🇿

A wonderful seminar from Beth Scott today! Temperature levels in the North Sea create stratified plankton blooms, 25-40m below the surface. Internal ocean waves catapult deeper living fish upwards to sea birds BUT, wind turbines mix water more, reducing the spring plankton bloom
