a real question from a child to their parent: “When David killed Goliath, God was sad, right?” It’s wisdom I continue to chew over years later.

Every single decision made about Sunday worship should have children in mind. Jesus’s church community will be one that echoes His, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

The Southern Baptist Convention made no such exchange. They kept their racism and the sexism has been there the entire time. They just change the levels on the mixer every few years.
It is not surprising that the Southern Baptist denomination, created so that slave owners could become missionaries, would exchange their racism for sexism. Utterly sad. But not surprising.

Pay attention, you wealthy people! Weep & moan over the miseries coming upon you. Your riches have rotted. Moths have destroyed your clothes. Your gold & silver have rusted, & their rust will be evidence against you. It will eat your flesh like fire. ~Jacob (Jesus’s bro)

“Jesus warned against mistaking the work of God’s Holy Spirit for the work of the devil. There is equal danger the other way round when people suppose they are working for God, while unthinkingly serving the powers.” ~N. T. Wright & Michael F. Bird “Jesus and the Powers”

To truly remember & honor those who have lost their lives to the violence of war, we must actively work for peace. Peacemaking is not passive, but it is love in action. For violence is never overcome by violence (this merely begets more violence). Violence is overcome by love.

Happy (Pentecost! Sunday, friends! If you’re looking for a Jesus-centered message this morning, here’s what I shared with our church last week: The Ascension Luke 24:50-53 & Acts 1:1-11 youtu.be/UgrGWdN3WBg

Today is Pentecost—the day which commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit on the first disciples of Jesus. It recalls the founding of the Christian Church. It’s a reminder of the fire that still burns inside of us, enabling us be the loving people Jesus has called us to be!

Tim has it. His knack for combining truth with an excellent turn of phrase is unmatched. Without detracting from his excellent words, I'll add this: People take up arms ... so they can kill Christ in others.
To take up arms is to deny Christ.

Let us learn to be rich in a different way: more attentive to relationships, more intent on valuing the common good, more attached to the local area, more grateful in welcoming and integrating those who come to live with us.
