Just heard Julian Marshall sign off on @bbcworldservice Newshour for the last time. A constant from fuzzy SW as I backpacked across Africa 35 yrs ago to around the world with the UN, to now listening on digital radio back home in Australia. Thank you Julian ❤️ @BBCNewsPR

Moving from 'offsetting' to 'contribution' in climate action. Are we reinventing the wheel or raising the bar? Let's not forget, in sustainability, our ultimate goal is genuine impact open.substack.com/pub/lucabi… #NetZero #offsetting #CarbonTax #bvcm #sbti

When it comes to climate solutions, forests don't get enough spotlight. Yet healthy forests can help us slow down climate change. Here's how: go.undp.org/Wx1S

Done right, #CarbonMarkets can help us get the resources we need now, at scale, and accelerate action by providing a much-needed source of finance. 7 key takeaways from the new report “State & Trends of Carbon Pricing: International Carbon Markets”: wrld.bg/el3P50Qj0Ee

I count at least 12 agenda items at #COP28 that got the dreaded "Rule 16" treatment – come back and try again next year – because no agreement could be reached Is that a record?! carbonbrief.org/interactive-…

OUTRAGEOUS: New #COP28 deleted "the importance of approaches to loss and damage that are gender-responsive, conflict-sensitive and respect human rights". This was one of the few #HumanRights references in the text, needed to complement weaknesses of #LossAndDamage Fund text!

Samoa, on behalf of @AOSISChair, say GST decision gavelled through when they were not in the room. "This process has failed us." Saying they are *not* happy with text in particular para 26 on science. #COP28

Extraordinary! First country intervention came from Samoa that said, while the decision accepts the dire science, it falls far short of action needed. The speech got a longer standing ovation than #COP28 president got for the adoption. A sense of the unhappiness from many.
Almost immediately after the start, the decision was adopted without opposition. It's not perfect, but it is nonetheless a historic step for all countries to agree for the very first time to transition away from all fossil fuels. @climate story: bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

To those who opposed a clear reference to phase out of fossil fuels during the #COP28 Climate Conference, I want to say: Whether you like it or not, fossil fuel phase out is inevitable. Let’s hope it doesn’t come too late.

#COP28 occurred at a decisive moment in the fight against climate change. It's important that the outcome of the Global Stocktake clearly reaffirms the need for limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C & that this requires drastic reductions in emissions in this decade. For the first time, there is a recognition of the need to transition away from fossil fuels – after many years in which the discussion of this issue was blocked.

.@AOSISChair was not in the room when the GST decision was gavelled through - a powerful representation of the actual deal and its large limitations. Strong applause and show of solidarity to Samoa's statement about how #COP28 has failed small island states.

It is difficult to see how this text will help to achieve the deep and rapid cut in emissions we need by 2030 to keep 1.5c alive With so many countries backing clear language on fossil-fuel-phase-out, who does this text actually serve? #COP28
BREAKING new #COP28 stocktake text Fossil fuel "phase out" is GONE Whole energy package is loose "actions that cld inc" ➡️refs renewables, CCS for "efforts twds substitution of unabated fossil fuels" ➡️loose 2050 timeline ➡️no methane target unfccc.int/sites/default/fil…
