Mamdani’s program makes a lot of sense if you accept the 11 basic premises of the young Democratic left. 1) Redistribution is free. Many of the things we rely on the private sector for could be done better through the public sector. The provision of services and goods by government should be expanded. 3) Policing and incarceration creates crime and violence. If we adopt a model of counseling, conflict resolution, and address underlying problems, we’ll need far less policing, fewer jails. 4) White supremacy is at the heart of most social and economic problems. Antiracism is not only morally required; it’s a program for improving the world. 5) Intersectionality works. The struggle against poverty, hate, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, climate change is a unified cause. 6) Capitalism is the root problem. Even when they function without corruption or monopoly, free markets tend to concentrate wealth and power. Regulation is. Not enough. Public ownership, worker control, and cooperative models are necessary. 7) Housing is a right. The distribution of housing through market mechanisms is deeply unjust and inefficient. 8) Healthcare is a right. Access to healthcare should be free and equal to all according to need. 9) Lived experience is epistemologically privileged. Subjective identity and experience outweigh empirical evidence and logical argument in discourse and policy making. 10) We live in a climate emergency. The urgency of climate change demands an overhaul of our economic and social systems. 11) Borders are inherently unjust. Restrictions on immigration are a continuation of colonialism and white supremacy.
