John Viriamu Jones (1856-1901), first principal of Cardiff University College (what would become modern day @cardiffuni), writing on the merits of music education. The language a little old fashioned, but the sentiment timeless. Take note, Vice Chancellor.
My letter to the Vice Chancellor of @cardiffuni today, following the shameful announcement of the impending closure of its Music Department @cardiffunimusic. If you haven't done so already, please sign the petition to save this cornerstone of Welsh arts. change.org/p/save-cardiff-un…
Please sign the petition to save @cardiffunimusic, a stalwart of the Welsh creative arts for generations. We cannot afford a linchpin of creativity to be lost to a failure of imagination. chng.it/KcNfNSsdxX
Today, we will remember all those who have died in war and conflict, including the 264 students who lost their lives in #WWI and the 103 students who lost their lives during #WW2. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

An update, three weeks on. The writing is completed. A crappy ebay guitar has been purchased as appropriate therapy.
More writing has commenced, but I'm running out of room for more instruments. I think I need to find a cheaper way of dealing with deadline stress...
How's my writing going? I've made a good start, established a structure, and am now on the "bidding for crappy electric guitars on Ebay" stage... #academiclife

Over four years in the making, my PhD is now officially confirmed and passed! You can find virtually all of the music that I wrote for it on my Spotify and Soundcloud, and if you're feeling brave you can now read my academic commentary here: orca.cardiff.ac.uk/id/eprint…
Very flattered to have been nominated for an ESLA for Most Outstanding Learning Experience - it's always a joy to share the adventure of learning with my students, and lovely to think that it's proven to be a good one. @CSUStudentVoice@cardiffstudents@cardiffunimusic
I have a new YouTube channel! Please do drop me a subscription, and take a look at the music video to 'Y Sguthan', from last year's recording session for Green Grow the Rushes, with the wonderful

My latest soundtrack, Welsh Awakenings, contains more than three dozen distinct themes and melodies, both original character motifs and numerous musical quotations of Welsh repertoire (and just a handful of Anglo-American ones too!). Can you hear them all in situ?

I've spent today reading critiques of Nationalism in folk music studies, from Ernest Newman, Francis Toye, and Ross Cole. It's fascinating to read such similar and insightful criticism of 'received wisdom' in folk music (Cecil Sharp's opinions), bridging a century of discourse.
'The fact of the matter is that folk-music–especially when it is as intrinsically excellent as that of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland–is quite admirable until people begin to make a cult of it.'
- Francis Toye, ‘A Case for Musical Nationalism’ (1918)
'"[F]olk song" is frequently employed [...] without significant attention paid to the broader political and discursive contexts that afforded its emergence and proliferation within the public sphere.
- Ross Cole, ‘On the Politics of Folk Song Theory in Edwardian England’ (2019)
