For those trying to figure out the economic damage from the new tariffs going into effect today, this tweet and the discussion that follows are useful. My own take is that this is an own goal for team USA. The only question is how much economic damage this will cause if the tariffs stay for an extended period. It is incredible to me that we want to start a trade war with, of all places, Canada.
A few rules for Tariff Weekend 2, NAFTA Boogaloo: 1. Wait for an official implementation document, w/ timing, scope, legal authority, exclusions, etc. Tweets/statements don't count. 2. Don't hysterically predict economic doom: the US is a massive services economy, & trade is a relatively small share of GDP. Things can be bad without being catastrophic (& your doomsaying can come back to haunt you) 3. Watch for market, govt, biz reactions - that'll tell you how serious this is. 4. As always, be nice and have fun!

Today’s view from my office on the @michiganstateu university campus. Snowing and cold, but it looks and feels like a very beautiful winter wonderland. WELCOME back to Spartan students who started spring semester classes yesterday. #Gogreen

How green are the G20 economies? No surprise that Russia isn’t on the clean energy path. The Chinese efforts towards green energy must always be seen from a security point of view but are really impressive so far. Good on you, Brazil.

Happy 64th Independence Day to #Nigeria, a country that still has a lot of growing up to do. A nation with lots of potential and abundance of natural resources, but equally abundant in bad governance, corruption and weak leadership. #EconomicGrowth #poverty #Inflation

Job market season! When I was on the market I had a disappointing start (150 applications, 1 interview). I decided to explore what factors correlate with academic and private interviews. Not sure if this holds today, but perhaps it can help job seekers! ideas.repec.org/p/feb/natura…
