The Manchester Ship Canal, a 36-mile waterway linking the city to the Mersey estuary, opened in 1894. It was wide enough to take ocean-going vessels and enabled the Port of Manchester to become Britainβs third-busiest port (Pic: 1882 Punch cartoon ridiculing the idea.) 1/6
