This is a win for our North Country and the local communities who have been fighting for years to have a say in the landfill siting process. I’m thrilled to see this legislation coming to my desk and look forward to signing it into law.
Without debate, N.H. House approves and sends on its way to @KellyAyotte landmark landfill siting bill (HB 707) as well as one to allow on-site slaughter of meat at facilities that are not USDA certified (HB 396). #nhpolitics

Places like Forest State Park are an example of the natural beauty that makes New Hampshire so special. We can’t let it become a dumping ground for out-of-state trash. I was glad to meet with local leaders and advocates pushing for a process that takes their voices into account.

“Remember as this plays out, New Hampshire doesn’t need more trash capacity, but Casella, a company aggressively acquiring contracts for waste disposal throughout the Northeast, needs a great deal of it.”#NHPolitics reader.concordmonitor.com/st…

“This company just made the largest settlement agreement on record with the NH DOJ for solid waste infractions — a $1.9 million fine for dangerous, chronic operational and safety violations at its Bethlehem landfill. There is jeopardy for the area’s enviro and economic vitality”
State and industry spokespeople report no need for new landfill development in New Hampshire for NH trash for decades, but Casella aims to make the North Country NE’s dump, importing trash that will bring them tremendous wealth at the region’s expense. #NHPolitics newhampshirebulletin.com/202…

I’m renewing my call to the Legislature to send me a moratorium on new landfills and a process that takes into account community input when siting these projects. It’s critically important that we protect the natural beauty that draws thousands of visitors to our state.

“It would force a landfill expansion against the will of the town,” said Morrison. “Usurping local control is, in our opinion, an incredibly bad idea.”
Bethlehem resident Rich Southwell spoke against a bill that he said would subvert local control and dissolve an existing legal agreement between the town a landfill operator that caps expansion after the permitted capacity is reached. #NHPolitics caledonianrecord.com/news/lo…

Wayne Morrison, president of the North Country Alliance for Balanced Change, said he saw the settlement as a recognition that Casella has had “pretty severe compliance issues.”
“I think it's time for the state to recognize that this is not an operator that we should be entrusting with another permit. We've been fighting for quite a while to say, the state of NH does not need additional capacity right now.” nhpr.org/nh-news/2026-01-13/…

We are sincerely grateful to the Governor for her leadership and bold vision, as well as to Senator Rochefort and the members of the House Environment and Agriculture Committee, led by Chairwoman Aron for their tireless efforts to advance critical landfill siting legislation.
New Hampshire's natural beauty is the bedrock of our quality of life. We shouldn't let beautiful places like Forest Lake become a dumping ground for out-of-state trash. I'll keep pushing for a moratorium on new landfills and a regulatory process that includes community input.
